Forums - Sony - Is Continuing To Support The PS3 So Much The Best Move?

So Sony tends to support their consoles for 10 years, or even longer in the case of the PS2.  This really does give the buyer reasurrance that they are buying a product that they will get their money's worth because the support is guaranteed to be there and I'm all for that, but I think Sony is going way overboard to prove this.

I still am shocked that GT6 will be on PS3 and not PS4 when that is Sony's #1 system seller, people can make whatever arguement they want, but GT6 basically trumps anything else currently announced on the PS4.  Also the arguement that it will be ported on PS4 later on, I'm gonna give the same response I did with Titanfall, if the average consumer can already buy a game on a current gen console then porting it to next gen gives no incentive for them to move to the next gen.  Games like R&C Into The Nexus I can understand being on the PS3.  As much as I love R&C it is not a system seller and will probably not help much with the launch of the PS4 so it makes sense to put it on the PS3 with the large install base.  Evolution Studios should have been the ones making the PS3 driving game and GT6 should have been on PS4 then they are still supporting the PS3.

People will make the arguement for The Last of Us, but that is perfectly justified on the PS3.  NaughtyDog has 2 studios that means right after Uncharted 3 was done NaughtyDog has been working on a PS4 title and considering how fast NaughtyDog is able to pump games out I can only assume it will come out by 2014.  It would not be beneficial to NaughtyDog to release 2 games on the PS4 and basically have those 2 games competing with each other, when they can just release one on the PS3 and make a ton of sales.

I can't really say anything on Beyond Two Souls because tbh we barely know anything about the game, and idk if its capable of being a system seller or not.  So what do you guys think, is this a good move on Sony's part or are they handicaping themselves with the PS4?

I think gt6 on the ps3 is a bad move. But continual support gives them money especially in the rest of the world so no it's not bad.

i don't think of it as a smart move TBH, the support of the PS2 alongside it's cheaper price point made it outsell the PS3

PS3 is now quite profitable, it will help offset initial PS4 costs.

Its profitable for the short-term future.  When the PS4 comes out Sony will be forced to drop the price of the PS3, I mean no one is gonna buy a last gen console for $300 and software sales will plumet.  It would have made more sense to put GT6 on the PS4 and invest in the future rather than get a quick check now, especially considering the PS4 will be around for 10+ years.

The GTA6 thing I can agree upon, would have been the killer app for PS4, even if it wasn't a launch title.

Yes, as others have said the PS3 will actually make them money.

Also the PS4 doesn't need a game like GT6 at launch in order to sell. Infact they could have GT6, FFXV and Metal Gear Solid 5 available on launch day and the sales will still limited to 3m this year and 6/7m by summer, remembering all launches are limited by supply. The best bet is normally to bring the heavy hitter out during a time where the next gen system can capitalise on it.

Yes it is the best move.

It tells customers that Sony consoles will not be abandoned for a long while. It makes them a safer purchase.

EDIT: It's what Nintendo used to do with SNES and NES.

I LOVE ICELAND!

It should have been GT6 Prologue.

I'm sure FF14, R&C Into The Nexus, Beyond Two Souls, Evolution's driving game (If that was on PS3 and GT6 was on PS4) and whatever unannounced titles make that statement on their own.  Putting GT6 on PS3 is overkill imo.
