Which is really all it should be to a working formula. Improve on what works.

As far as his claims that the look isn't that impressive, particularly animations, I'm not sure what he sees. This is an open world game, in the beginning of the gen, and with all that graphical flair + the fluidity.

As a total package, I cannot understand what he doesn't see as next gen. This game is taking what InFamous has to the next level in terms of gameplay and presentation. InFamous 2 was a huge graphical leap over part one and this is heads and tails above part two. The level of destruction that can be accomplished in this game is beyond part two from the looks of it. The cinematics and motion capture blow part two away and makes LA Noire look like childsplay. Yeah, I'm lost.

Remember playing on the PS2, and then opening your shiney new Xbox 360 and popping in Gears of War? I'm not quite seeing the same kinda leap here. This still looks very much like last-gen territory to me. When I enter into a new console generation I'm looking for things that simply wouldn't be possible on previous consoles. Sure, the smoke and particle effects are nice, but they don't even come close to the smoke and particle effects seen in the Elemental tech-demo. The dynamic lighting I don't think is even quite dynamic as when he throws his fire balls it seems that the light emitted is pre-determined to cast certain ways on the environment and himself. Take a look at 2:05 and see the way the light reacts on the security guard.

Where is that leap that I'm looking for? I haven't found it with this game as of yet. The leap that I'm looking for? I think the elemental tech demo is a good place to start, and if we can arrive at some point where the original Deep Down trailer is what we can expect to see in real time, it'd be then where I'd be satisfied that we've made the generational leap. This game looks like an evolution but more along the lines of a micro and not at the macro level.

You will see the leap gradually, as in from the middle to the end of the generation. This generation is only preparing us for the truest next gen leap which will be in five to seven years time.

Just the fact that you used Deep Down as a measuring stick tells me your expectatioons are outrageous. You actually thought that was real-time, or that some game will look like that, particularly this early in the gen? You're going to continue to be disappointed, then, regardless of the game or console. Not even the best looking PC games look like that.

Just for your info, the deep down tech demo was real time. You can believe the devs are lying I guess.

A 2011 PS3 (5 years old) game versus a 2014 PS4 launch window game. Considering the PS3 pretty much hit its visual peak by that time and this is a game releasing a only a few months into the PS4's life, I'd say the differences are good enough. Besides, the closer you get to photorealism the more difficult it is to see improvements.

In inFAMOUS: Second Son's case, what they've shown is leaps and bounds ahead of previous titles in the series. Your view is in the minority, as most people that have seen the game agree, and this is with 5+ months left of dev time. Lastly, as far as that Elemental Tech Demo goes, it hasn't been shown working in any game, yet, let alone an open-world title.

I don't think my expectations are outrageous, but rather high enough to want to see a meaningful enough difference in a new game on a new console in a new generation. Look at games like God of War: Asscention, or especially Beyond: Two Souls: those two are absolutely amazing games to be seeing on the PS3. I haven't heard about any new animation technology like Naughty Dog did with the Uncharted series, or facial screen capturing like L.A. Noir. The only thing I'd consider fully next-gen was the Dark Sorcerer tech-demo, but even then I feel that the effects work (such as the fire) could use a little work.

I'm looking for innovation, and right now I'm seeing more of the same. I'm in no way meaning to imply that innovation won't come at all, but I'm not really seeing it right now in most of these launch games. Perhaps then my expectations are a little high for the beginning of a generation, but even still I was impressed with launch games for the PS3 when I got mine for Christmas for the first time.
