Forums - Nintendo - Iwata: Why Nintendo Games Aren't Works of Art

I think what he's trying to say is that Nintendo doesn't design games so that they become a piece of art but rather focuses on the 'preferences of the consumer', not that games themselves can't be considered art. At least that's how I see it, and, again, if that is what he wanted to express, then I totally agree with him.

Umm it's a business and it's supposed to be like that. It still pulls off masterpieces like SMG, LoZ, Xenoblade, etc.. I don't see what the big deal is :/

When I said "art", people took that the wrong way, they thought I meant the game to have art as you'll see in a museum. No, I meant "personality", setting up an image for the characters you grow to like, also base around the setting and story.

Not all games need to be a masterpiece or anything, but again, its nice to have an image. I'm still going to support Nintendo, I plan to buy 3D World and W101 (most definitely).

Don’t follow the hype, follow the games

Here a little quote I want for those to keep memorize in your head for this coming next gen.

i'll just say "it takes all types".

i like cinematic games like uncharted. i like pure gameplay games like fat princess. a healthy industry spans the full range and everything in between and a few things outside the box.

everything what iwata says gets misunderstanded 99 % of the time....

Welp, seems as though I can't defend them on that point anymore.

And, "...Resonates with and is accepted by customers." At least they got that with the 3DS...

Games don't need to be art, they just need to be fun. I am glad Nintendo realizes this.

Of course games aren't art, what kind of pretentious statement is that? Games are games. They do have art components in them though such as graphics, music, and creative writing.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Games dont need to be works of are but many have become works of art once more artistic measure was put into them as technology evolved.

Most nintendo games do not have the cast of characters, story or atmosphere of games like bioschock infinite or mass effect. Nor the freedom, exploration, replayability of skyrim. Things should change with their future releases.
