You expect to benefit from it by avoiding eternal suffering and receiving eternal happiness and joy. Avoiding what you fear and seeking beneficial life conditions is part of human nature, after all.

Not every religion has you on your knees.

OT: The OP and title need to be more clear about which religion they are talking about. Just saying "Religious people" and then asking a question about Hell isn't very productive. If you mean Christian, say Christian. If you mean Buddhist, say it. Etc.

This is one of a few biblical account that describes hell:

Luke.16 Verses 19 to 31

[19] "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.
[20] And at his gate lay a poor man named Laz'arus, full of sores,
[21] who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
    [22] The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried;
[23] and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Laz'arus in his bosom.
[24] And he called out, `Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Laz'arus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.
[25] But Abraham said, `Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Laz'arus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish
[26] And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.'
[27] And he said, `Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house,
[28] for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
[29] But Abraham said, `They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.'
[30] And he said, `No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'
[31] He said to him, `If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

Still trying to find hell in any  ofithis. Sounds more like limbo than hell.

Read the bolded part. you'll find your answer. it was also so bad that he urged for someone to go from the dead and warn his brothers.

Ohhhhhhhh! You're talking about Gehenna!

What is discussed there is the Christian idea of "hell".  Of course, it's not an explicit description.  It's a story by Jesus explaining what it's like to be in hell, not what hell is actually like.  Christians didn't take "hell" from vikings or anyone else.  It is its own unique concept, and contrary to pop culture it doesn't involve a red guy with horns and a tail sitting on a thrown, Ozzie Osborn or many other stereotypes.  It does involve a lack of God, a lack of wonderful things, and a lack of eternal life.

As an atheist, the idea of hell is so flawed and ridiculous, that I can't believe it hasn't set off some red flags for religious people.

If you believe in God then there is a counter point....hell.

At least all Jews, Christians, and Muslims feel this way. I am not sure how the other world religions feel on the subject.

I did not think Jewish people had the concept of a hell, it was a new testament addition.  Any one with further knowledge can correct me if wrong.

Of course most of them believe that atheists are going to hell. If not, what would be the point of their religious practicing? Why would they spend years on their knees before God if those who do not may receive the same reward anyway?

Not everyone is motivated solely by rewards.

Correct. Avoiding punishment is also a key motivator.

I don't recall claiming that that was the case. Christianity and Islam, for example, are such cases though: The whole point is for you to submit to God/Allah and follow everything he says.

I understand, I used to be Christian. I am going by the jewish understanding which is actually the correct one.

Ofcourse they believe in hell.
They are scared from it, that's why they are religious.

Nope. Not a Bible teaching. Pure Christian mythology.
