I should hope people don't believe in hell. It just doesn't make any damn sense.

If you believe in hell I say this:

I assume you think child molesters go to hell. Ok fine. Also rapists. Mass murderers.

What about people who've murdered one person?
How about someone who killed someone in fit of passion/rage?
What about accidental homicide?

Would you send thieves to hell? Liers? Small white liers or just the huge big liers? Politicians?

What if you just swear all the time?

Oh of course and the athiests?

What's the cut off point of sin that lands you in hell rather than heaven?

Remember, hell is FOR ALL ETERNITY. Burning and screaming in pain on and on, forever.

Oh and lets not forget the loophole called repentance. Where if you are really really sorry, no halfsies sorries, no matter if you committed some heinousness act or just swore really hard you can slip into heaven.

It doesn't make any sense. Hell for eternity for what is often a very very brief stint on earth is the dumbest concept ever.

Heaven as a concept is not that much better.

I'm just trying to say that it's shallow to think that those motivators are the ONLY ones, which is what it sounded like you were saying.  You can boil literally anything down to the polar level--"everybody does things that make them feel GOOD instead of BAD."  Sure, everything is based on that basic concept, but as you said our reasoning capabilities are more complex and thus we can articulate our motivations more deeply.  And there are plenty of Christians that could list a number of reasons that they're Christians other than "I want to go to heaven and not hell" (i.e. "I want the treat and not the squirt bottle").  They've chosen these reasons based on what they feel is beneficial for them just as any animal will, but it doesn't mean heaven or hell specifically have everything to do with them.

The words that are usually translated as hell, usually only refer to the state of being dead and not some place of fiery torment. (Sheol, Hades and Gehenna) In Jeremiah when he was addressing Israel on their burning their children alive to Molech, he stated that such an act never came up to do such a detestable thing. (Jeremiah 32:35) And in Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6 and 10 it points that the dead are conscious of nothing at all, and that the only punishment for those who sinned, no matter the sin is just death. When Jesus was referring to Gehenna, which was a garbage dump outside Jerusalem, he was trying to draw the point that the destruction was total, not that they will forever burn in torment.

The only other "punishment" for those that make an enemy of god is their names being taken out of the book of life, or lose their chance for a resurrection as refered to in many places, but the best one to use here is Acts 24:15, since it points out that even if you sin you will get a second chance at life in the "resurrection of the unrightous".

I'm more disturbed that people think that I am going to a place like hell.
