I did wind up going with the cheap case. With that, I'd rather do $35 now, and upgrade to a much more expensive case down the road, since this will at least do the job.

Yeah that case is totally fine... The fact you have a modular power supply now and can only plug the cables that you need will help you keep everything clean...since the case doesn't have a way to route cables through the back.

You may want to pick up a cheap 5 dollar 120 mm case fan and put it on the back for exhaust. It has a front intake fan, but no exhaust fan.

Hey guys, I just sold my 3 year old laptop for $460 and was going to purchase another laptop but have switched mindsets and will be building a budget based gaming pc.

Budget: Up to $850

What I have found:

Motherboard: Asus z87a

Processor: Intel core i5 4570k

Memory: 8gb Kingston HyperX Red (4gbx2) 1600 mhz

Graphics: Gtx 650 ti 2gb

Power Supply: Ultra LSP650 650 watt

Hard Drive: WD Blue 500 gb sata 3.5" 7200 rpm

Cd: LG 24x DVD Burner

Case: Thermaltake Commander MS-I Tower Case

OS: Windows 8 64 bit

I dont intend on overclocking initially but want the option open hence a z87 mobo and unlocked cpu. The gpu could go up or down slightly if its seen as over/underdone. I realize the hard drive and power supply may not be the greatest but thats part of a pack so it will likelybe upgraded eventually. I may do a ssd for games and os but not quite yet.

My whole cost at the moment is about 775 after shipping. Im curious if there are other parts I need to buy such as wires or cooling type stuff? Otherwise does this look decent for a mid level rig or are certain things lacking?

Your CPU is overkill and your GPU is a very weak.

-Go with the cheapest IB or HW i5 you can get or an FX-8320.

-Get a 650 Ti Boost/7850 2GB with the money saved, or get this 7870GHz for $185!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah he should update the OP...the rig he got includes:

FX 6300

MSI 970 - G43 mobo

7870

240 GB SSD

OCZ ZT - 750 W PSU

For less money than the initial rig listed I believe.

Op updated to reflect actual build. It is indeed less expensive than the initial despite a better gpu, better psu, and a better hd.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

As far as Steamroller, you may be right... I am going simply on what has been reported on thus far.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2208525/amd-sticks-with-socket-am3-for-steamroller

He is memory limited, not bandwidth limited. I should know know, I run into the same limitations on my own system running at 7680x1440 despite using PCI-E 3.0 16x.
When you become memory limited, the GPU has to send more information down the PCI-E bus to access the information in System Ram/HDD, which is where he sees the impact.

As for Steamroller, The Inquirer is reporting on rumor, AMD has neither confirmed or denied it yet. - I would love to see AM3+ get Steamroller, both my AMD systems (1090T HTPC and the FX 8120) will get upgraded to it if it's compatible, I just wouldn't buy into a platform hoping for a future CPU release, you might walk away dissapointed like so many when they jumped onto AM3 hoping for world-changing Bulldozer. (And thus only having the ASUS Crosshair IV support the CPU's unofficially!)

That OCZ PSU is decent, lots of amps on the 12v rail, not a bad choice.

Also Op, welcome to the PC Gaming master race, may all your games be good ones!

It looks like he is hitting both the VRAM limit and the PCIe 2.0 limit....if you look at the video at around 5:10 mark he talks about the PCIe 2.0 limit... then if you look at his second vide, where he switches to PCIe 3.0, you can see the quad SLI really fly.

As far as steamroller, you may be right. I was reading the specs on the FM2+ boards Asus just announced and maybe AMD will be utilizing only APUs moving forward on the consumer market. But if they do release FX based Steamrollers, I dont see them changing the socket. Everyone knows whatto expect from Steamroller and I dont think they can warrant a brand new platform, unless they can provide a brand new architecture that Excavator can ustilize as well.

As I said, because he is hitting the video memory limit, the video card has to resort to hitting the PCI-E bus to get information from system memory.
If he had a GPU with more memory, the PCI-E bus wouldn't be an issue, I've seen it in the past running things like a Radeon 2400pro on the PCI bus (Not PCI-E).
Where if a game heavily streams information from system memory to the GPU, performance tanks, yet if a game can load up all the information it needs into the GPU's memory, the performance impact is minimal.
For example, on the PCI 2400pro if you run Oblivion, every time you enter a new Cell the game engine loads the GPU up with assets, this wouldn't have been a problem with AGP or PCI-E as they are fast enough to keep up with a Radeon 2400, but on the PCI bus, you have to wait for all the games assets to be loaded into memory before continuing on playing.
Then if you jump onto another game like Unreal Tournament 3 or Bioshock, it's perfectly fine as it can fit everthing it needs to in the GPU's memory.

However, this is an extreme case, the PCI bus is only 133MB/s, but it goes to show even in the most extreme cases, it's not going to make gaming impossible.

As for Steamroller, it will come, just not sure on the sockets.
AMD builds server processors, which are incredibly high-margin pieces of silicon, the chips that don't make the cut need to go somewhere and the high-end Desktop is the place to send it to.
Whether it will require a new socket depends on whether AMD will be following Intel and integrating the voltage systems into the processor die or integrating a GPU. (Which would be a boon for servers that can use GPU compute!) both/either of which would require a new socket.
It's all in AMD's court at this stage.

Nice, well balance build!

Hey guys, just a quick update.

I got all the parts and put them together between yesterday and today. It did take me several hours (which I expected since I really had no clue what I was doing). First about 10 attempted startups resulted in nothing. No lights, nada. Turns out for some reason I had unplugged the power supply from the motherboard. Immediately after that, boom, everything worked perfect. Loaded every component perfectly as it should.

Took about 5 minutes to install windows 8. Had a little issue with text being really blurry, but a windows update fixed that.

Some quick add-ons:
Keyboard: I bought a Logitech K800 for $80. I went to Best Buy and tested all their keyboards out and was addicted to this thing.

Wifi Adapter: I got a Netgear N600 for $40. I wasn't even going to get a wifi adapter, but after plugging my internet cable into the wall, it turns out our owner just has cable going through the house, not internet (not a big deal as I prefer the convenience of wifi anyways)

Headset: I used to have a Creative headset with my laptop that I paid $50 for and lasted like 2 years. Unfortunately I tripped over the cable a few months ago which destroyed the usb thingy on it. I wound up getting a Plantronics Gamescon 780 for $50 at Best Buy. It also came with some $15 game download for free.

Fans: I already knew from the getgo when my case only came with one fan I would need more (that one is a 120mm located on lower front of case). I ordered 2 extra blue led 120 mm fans that I will be mounting on the top of my case. They cost like $9 each.

So all in all, the computer itself ran about $750, but with additional components, it will be $940.

I really appreciate the help guys, you really let me put together what I think is a hell of a machine (It is SOOOOO fast).
