Halo 4 is a huge step up storywise compared to Reach and I thats 100% because of the fact that Bungie was replaced to me. |
Curious, what did you find characters missing, too obvious in Reach, or something completely different? I didn't remember that we were 'already supposed to know how it ends' as I had been away from the Halo Universe for a long, long time.
I did figure out how it was going to end, well, mostly. But when Kat died, I had to replay the level right after a number of times. And I forget who it was, kept saying how much he missed her. I was a mix of furious, sad, and "I know, shut up about it!"
Yes, Halo 4 is very well done. The most engrossing game I have played, I could not put it down.

None of the Halo's ever reached the level of depth that the book provided until Halo 4. Of course they were good games but storywise were pretty weak. Masterchief had zero dimensions not any character development. He was just captain run and gun. Theres nothing emotion they could've done while Bungie was at the helm. When Microsoft made 343 they literally comissioned the best of the best in the industry to come together for a game with one of the largest budgets I've ever seen.
Halo Reach, just showed us characters that had potential but very little depth. they talked a bit of shit trying to play off the Gears of comrade linguistics while played certain roles and then died one after the other in predictable fashion. It couldn't even say their deaths were abrupt, I knew they were mostly coming. I didnt get Bungies concept of a last stand when I was trying to survive either. If you want me to feel the emotion you must force me to do something I do not want to do or see something I don't want to see. In the Last of Us....you get this in the first thirty minutes of the prologue of the game, seeing something you just are not emotionally ready for and then it hits you like a ton of bricks and then the game just goes on forcing you to adapt to the world you've been introduced to.
Halo 4, I can't say was one of the most engrossing game I have played because I grew up on storybased JRPG's with emotional stories and they tried very hard to touch us in Halo 4. A very valiant effort. It was a huge leap for what Halo is and the progression was done well enough. Its got me waiting for Halo 5 big time. I have a feeling if anything at all that will be the only game to make me buy an Xbone in truth.

I haven't read any of the Halo books. Any recommendations, or order I should read them in?

Fall of Reach for starters. Thats the only one I've read thus far but theres numerous books now. They are pumping out Halo books like water these days, bro.
The ending of Red Dead Redemption and the ending of the last of us almost made me cry.
Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)
'When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called the people's stick'- Mikhail Bakunin
Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030
Persona 3, Kingdom Hearts.
Twewy made me feel sad, than angry at some characters so often that I can't tell if there was a tear at some part.
Final Fantasy X too, with the whole "I hate you dad" thing in the end.

FF7 when aeris died. Cant think of anything since then.
Things like mgs3 ending and Mass effect 3 in tutchanka and the quarian home world, aswell as the ending were quite emotional though.
The only game that made me shed a couple of tears is MGS4. God, the old legend struggling, the reunion and all that, yeah the ending got to me.
I wanted to say MGS5 when Kojima announced it will be multiplatform from day one, but someone beat me to it ;-P (I've got a few giggles, thanks for that :D)
Heavy Rain had also quite a few emotional moments, Move controls only added to the immersion.
The Last of Us also was very emotional, but unfortunately I've ran into some spoilers so the ending didn't have that much impact story wise...
So it is happening...PS4 preorder.
Greatness Awaits!
