Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Quietly Courts Indies Without “Making a big fuss”, devs say

Nintendo is quietly courting a large number of indie developers to make games for the Wii U. The only thing is there not fist pumping and telling everyone about it like Sony. Some indie developers discussed what Nintendo is doing with Edge.  Via VG247: In an interview with Edge, four indie developers had nothing but good things to say about Nintendo’s approach to indies. Lau Korsgaard of Spin the Bottle said Nintendo is quietly doing all the right things. “Meanwhile Nintendo is just doing the right thing without making a big fuss about it,” he said. “They work on establishing genuine human relationships with the indies. They are working on making their tools easily accessible and free and provide equipment for you and are super encouraging in general.” Ragnar Tørnquist of Dreamfall Chapters developer Red Thread Games agreed, noting that Nintendo is much more approachable than Microsoft. “I don’t think Nintendo gets enough credit for their indie efforts. There are a lot of intriguing indie titles on the eShop, and they’re obviously passionate about increasing the variety of range of games available,” he said. “They’re still lagging a bit behind Sony in terms of indie support, but I think that has more to do with how closed their hardware has been in the past, rather than a lack of willingness and engagement from their developer relations.” More indie developers: http://www.edge-online.com/news/indies-on-wii-u-how-does-nintendos-approach-compare-to-sony-and-microsofts/

Why is "making a big fuss" a problem? It's just PR and advertising. I would have never heard about Octodad if it wasn't for Sony showcasing it during their E3. Now I can't wait to play it. Maybe Sony is bragging about their awesome indie support but if it makes the devs happy, and it makes the gamers happy, what's the issue?

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

they also allowed Used games and no DRM without causing a big fuss like Sony did. why? because this is the RIGHT thing to do.

Whats wrong with a big fuss? its free advertisement, helps me become more aware of the titles that are coming out. Nintendo is doing it all wrong if you ask me....

So many people thought that Sony was doing the same thing MS was doing. They had to clarify because many took their silence as a "we're doing the same as MS without talking about it".

Nintendo has humility, That is why they get trampled often by Sony, journalist and pachturd's - can't defend themselves.

Sony in the other hand is the cocky cool guy that everyone love's.

If i were a business owner i would be the latter, as an individual i would be the former

So they do easily marketable things and don't market it.

In corrporate terms, we call that "Idiots"

not a big fuss, is not exactly a plus for indies trying to sell more games...

People seem to be interpreting Nintendo "not making a big fuss" as them not supporting or advertising the indie titles they've been attracting.

Let me show you how wrong that misconception is.

Digital releases (mostly indie games) showcased during Nintendo's main E3 presentation (just like Sony did!)

Mutant Mudds developer Jools Watsham is happy with his game's real estate on the eShop

In mid-January, in a thread on NeoGaf, Gunman Clive developer Bertil Hörberg commented that "it would certainly be nice to get more promotion from Nintendo." The next week, the game was featured on the front row of both the North American and European eShops; a few weeks later, Bertil mentioned that his game "has also been included in various lists on the eShop almost every week." One last quote, over a month later: "I'm very happy with the amount of exposure they've given the game after release, in the eShop and elsewhere."

What the Edge interview suggests that Nintendo is "not making a big fuss" about is not the indie developers supporting the eShop; it's Nintendo's support for indie developers. You guys have it backwards. They ARE making a fuss about their indie games. They are NOT making a fuss about their own policies regarding support for indie developers.

Whilst Nintendo should market this (and themselves) more, this is a policy for developers. As such, why do we, the public, need to know? We don't is the answer. The only reason Sony goes on about it is because people eat up all their announcements like they're big deals, when actually most of them are just the norm.

But this isn't the time for that discussion. Instead, I'll just say that this isn't something we need to know, for it doesn't affect us directly.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.
