Forums - Microsoft - Lanning: Xbox One team should be fired over indie stance

The best indie games always find a way. Because they're that good.

Didn't xbox used to be the place to go for indies? what changed....

Does this mean they have some sort of exclusive deal with Sony? Because when they went with MS on the first Xbox and abandoned the PS2, this same guy crapped on Sony and said PS2 was maxed out before launch. Among other things. He seems to enjoy trash talking companies he does not plan on partnering with for awhile.

Either way, idk what MS has set to announce regarding indies. Maybe self-publishing, but doubtful. Maybe they simply snagged a slue of timed exclusive indie titles like Sony showed at E3. Either way, 360 had no self-publishing for XBLA or indies and it was still the best system for those types of games.

Prima-donna indies seem to let their sense of entitlement get the better of them so that they bite the hand that feeds them. Microsoft is a business and to be honest, I think their XBLA policy has kept the quality very good with seldom stinker games, and very very rarely buggy games.

Nothing has changed.  MSFT often times searches for arcade titles and publishes them.

I find it crazy that this has even been a complaint among "supposed fans"as of lately when MSFT has been known for bringing some of the biggest arcade games to X360 first or completely exclusive including.

Castle Crashers
Trials
BattleBlock Theater
Minecraft
Elysian Tales
Braid
Bastion
FEZ
Geometry Wars
Trials Evolution
Shadow Complex
Geometry Wars 2
Terraria
Max: The Curse of Brotherhood
Crimson Dragon
REZ
Hydro Thunder Hurricane
State if Decay
Hexic HD
Happy Wars
Limbo
Splosion Man
Ms Splosion Man
Toy Soldiers
Maw
Deadlight

And this list goes on.  All these games has been exclusive or timed exclusives as far as i am aware.  I find it odd that XBLA has been the biggest digital store on consoles and known for bringing the biggest games excluding a few, yet "Supposed Fans" are complaining.  Now I understand indie developers complaining, but not fans because you guys have got a ton from XBLA this gen and that is because they go out and search for talent.

Indie games are 99.5% trash and not even worth a Dollar.
Somehow indie developers are the most vocal ones. They talk so much nonsense about something they have clearly no idea about.

I am glad MS divided the indie and XBLA section. I always thought that the really good indie games out of the 1000 trashy ones are on XBLA and not in the "indie" section. I browsed the indie section and it was such a nightmare. I mean, how many firework simulators do we really need?

Yesterday, I just made a thread about how much I enjoy State of Decay. This is one of the <10 indie games for an entire generation (8 years!) that is worth your time. Normally indie games get away with everything, because they are indie games. And self-publishing would notbe beneficial for the consumer, because all this will do is push so much crap in the market that really quality titles will be overshadowed.

I don't get why indie developers try to hate on MS anyway. Most of the "big" indie games are either MS exclusive or timed exclusive. Minecraft, State of Decay, Braid, Limbo or Fez for example.

In a word: I hope MS keeps on supporting the indie games like they are doing it now. Scout the best games, fund and release them. If there is a publisher for this game, let them release it on XBLA, because the publisher will do the same things MS did (scout, fund and release). Keep the indie section for the self-published trash.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

No matter what people say about XBox 360 indie library and MS's stance so far, something's definitely wrong. The article points that out. A known developer with a known brand was trying and struggling to get their game released on a system by a company they'd worked with before. What's stopping them? Microsoft and their policies. Then when they publish on another platform, MS just end things. This isn't good business.

People in the business talk to each other, one indie developer talks to another, "I had these issues with so and so", suddenly they've got a reputation. If you have bad dealings with a company, it sticks in the mind. These indies will one day be making full releases and you think they'll put in on a console that scorned them before?

I've don't know what MS demands are but with indie devs all over the place saying the same thing, surely someone is going to have to accept things are not going as planned.

What if MS change their mind, allow more freedom for indies to release on Xbox One, is it too late? Developers might have lost faith already and just won't release there.

Hmm, pie.

I'm getting so sick of these arrogant indie devs.....

Hate to break it to them but most of their games are garbage. There's a few gems, no doubt, but some of these guys act like they're god's gift to gaming.

People who are still denying that there is a problem with the way Microsoft handles smaller developers really, seriously need to stop and think about this for a moment. It doesn't matter how much you like the company, how much you like Halo or Forza, if there is an area where they need to do some major improvements then you should just accept and acknowledge it--and this is such an area. It's crystal clear by this point that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. Simply denying it over and over is worse than meaningless.

I think what pisses me off the most, though, is how many people are attacking these developers over this, or even more mind-numbingly, attacking indie games in general. I mean, what the hell? There are thousands of quality games from small developers, some of them bordering on genius; thrashing around like a harpooned whale and attacking the entire genre is ridiculous.

A lot of these developers were even on Xbox first. Doesn't that tell you something? Doesn't that indicate that it's not fanboy pride or because "they can't sell"? We've seen well-known, critically-acclaimed developers stand up and tell us that Microsoft has lost a step to the competition. That's not something to get mad at the bloody DEVELOPERS about, it's something you should be asking Microsoft to fix.

And, for the record, I have little doubt that they will--eventually, anyway. They're smart guys, they know what they need to do. They just need to shift their focus away from the Activisions and EAs long enough to evaluate and refine their processes. It's for the good of Xbox and gaming in general that they right the ship as soon as possible. Why anyone would struggle against that I have NO idea.

Nice post! I fully agree.

Seems like no one read it though. I often wonder how fanboyism works its way into almost every thread nowadays to the point of complete delusion. Its sad.

Its as if every indie dev is suddenly worthless, sony fanboys that cant make decent games all because they dont like the way MS is handling things.

MS will adapt and when they do it will be a big win for Xbox gamers.

It absolutely floors me the way people are striking out at small developers and indie games simply because a few of them dared speak critically of Microsoft.  You'd think they were religious zealots going after blasphemers.  Absolutely and completely stuns me.  I'm being perfectly honest when I say that I would never, ever have expected that response.

What I expected was for a few to deny a problem, but for the majority to say, "it's good for developers, gamers, and the Xbox brand if they can address these issues."   It's not like we're talking about things which can't be improved upon--both Nintendo and Sony, companies with worse indie programs than Microsoft to start with, have improved to an extraordinary degree.

Truly, I find the venom distasteful and pathetic.  Microsoft has lost quality games because of their out-dated and draconian policies.  What kind of real gamer wants that?

Edit:  Oh, and one other thing.  It's going to be interesting to see how some of these people who deny any problems at all change their tune when Microsoft comes out and says they're going to improve the way they handle small developers.
