really, really beautiful....and remember: This game started on the Wii (as you can see by looking at the ground textures)

Is that why?  I knew something was bothering me.  "Wow, those plants are amazing, and those rocks are ... huh?"

Still, that amphibian creature is one of the best things I've ever seen in gaming.  I want one that will just sit there and look at me exactly like that.

Yeah, the development started in 2008 (with a tiny, tiny team, like most Nintendo games ) but was later moved to the WiiU, that is the reason why it looks...a bit inconsistant (the rocks and ground are relatively ugly, but the character models like Pikmin, flowers and enemies are pretty detailed)

the art direction is really strong too, just look at those enemies:

Sad news guys, two more reviews down, and the Metascore has hit 86. I expect it to stay around that:

What I find interesting is how every review is between 8 and 9. That seems to be where the quality is.

This game oozes enjoyability.

You know, I think the only thing holding the Pikmin franchise back (in terms of sales) is the lack of an identifiable "mascot" type character that people know by name. It's something people tend to associate with Nintendo games. They should name one of the Pikmin "Willard" or something and I bet sales would spike.

Wouldn't the Pikmin themselves be considered the mascot? That, or Olimar. (If he was kept around more in Pikmin 3...)

OT: 86 is not bad at all. I hope it won't go lower than 84, however. The game deserves more than that.

it is at 87 %

Not enough "wow" for a 10 I'd guess. Of course 4Players as a German magazine won't ever give out a 10 for any game (you could say the scala ends at 9.5 - which would be Game of the Generation material - in Germany), but even to achieve a 9 a game must be a big step up in the genre, which Pikmin 3 doesn't seem to be. A very high quality title with great gameplay and improved graphics, but not enough of an improvement to warrant a 9. At least that's how I interpret the scores.

That's a good way of seeing it, yes. Though having said that, it's now at 87 with a 10 review added:

so i have read several reviews. so the main complaints are:

1. No co op and online
2. low res textures on the floor
3. tad short

Other than that it is looking very good. Most have lauded the charm of the game. I am so hyped. I can't wait till i review it.

Pretty much. Here is my response to these:

1. There's co-OP in the challenges and the Bingo Mode, so that's enough surely? Also, there's online leader boards...

2. The low res floor textures are frustrating, but the character models and flora make up for it, certainly.

3. I'm seeing numbers like 10-15 hours to blitz through the story being knocked about, another 5 if you get everything. 20 hours, excluding the 16 challenges on unique maps in a game which is designed to be replayed is fine by me.

So yeah. Those faults are nothing for me.
