Murphy's comments relate to the early days of PES on PS3, where Konami struggled to adapt its PS2 engine.

"Perhaps we're in a slightly different position to another company in that sense", says Murphy.

"We can't get away with producing a version that isn't absolutely shit-hot on next generation.

EA thinks they can.

FIFA 14 on PS4one looks current gen for me.   EA doesn't even show gameplay of the game, only replays.

Not surprising since their main market is South America. A hypothetical PS2 version would have outsold a hypothetical PS4 version easily.

But still, not going into competition with FIFA kinda shows how low the series has fallen.



Just a fun fact:

last fiscal year FIFA 13 (14.5m) shipped more than everything Konami produced (13.6m).

Early in a generation is when you can "re set" the scales because gamers are more open to change and try new IPs or give competitive IP a shot. By conceding at least a year to FIFA I think Konami have done a lot of work to ensure EA's football game dominance for next generation. Which is a shame as worry will lead to stagnation after a dynamic generation where EA went back and overhauled FIFA which led to overtaking PES.
