Forums - Gaming - “Certain” AAA IP Needs 10 Million Copies to Break Even says

Then perhaps "certain" developers should quit spending $10+ over-bloated budgets on these so-called "AAA" games, and then great studios like Free Radical and Factor 5, etc. etc. etc. etc., wouldn't have gone out of business.

Video games are not Hollywood films, nor do they need to be. The faster western (and some eastern) developers figure that out, the better off the industry will be. Sadly, I have a feeling that it will get much worse before it gets better, as all recent trends have indicated.

Yea fuck those developers spending more than $10, I mean more than one person doesn't need to eat lunch one day during development.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

IMO it's Watch Dogs

PC/360/PS3/WiiU/PS4/Xbox One versions.
4 1/2 years in development.

Though Destiny is also possible.

EDIT: after reading some other posts, Destiny might be even more possible.

I can't believe nobody has said it - obviously (rolls eyes) it's World of Tanks!

It should have no problem selling that much. Although, it is hard to make money selling a game for free. That must be why they have to sell so many.

(Actually, I don't think there is any way it could be TitanFall - that's too much money to spend in the short time ReSpawn has been around. So my vote is Bungie’s Halo 5 Destiny. Which it probably can do, being multi plat an all, if it is any kind of hit like it's predecessors.)

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Yea, Titanfall afaik is a map based multiplayer shooter. That shouldn't take anywhere near as much to develop as an open world game with the same level of detail (like Destiny and The Division).

Marketing budget for these titles should be comparable though.

Really? Nobody guessed Quantum Break yet? That thing looked like a high budget movie.

And it's not Watch Dogs, that was properly introduced before E3.

I can't believe that people are even guessing Titanfall. First of all, the graphics of that game are honestly pretty bad. This is mostly due to the fact that the team is fairly small, and that they are using a very dated game engine (Valve's Source Engine). The scope of the game is also very limited. Titanfall is pretty much a competitive multiplayer only game. Respawn studios does not have the manpower, nor the budget to work on a campaign.

But seriously. By just looking at it alone, I don't see how that game could even rack up such a huge production cost, especially because it is currently being developed for only one platform.

I'm almost 100% sure that the game he is talking about is Destiny and this makes me very excited. Bungie has already said that there is still a whole lot of new things about the game that they have yet reveal. Seeing as they have such a huge production budget, I'm sure that these unrevealed features are pretty significant.

I hope Cliffy B is on drugs or that he too considers it a gossip-worthy exception and not a future general rule, otherwise I can see a new great videogame crash approaching, and far worse than the worst ever happened in the past.

10 Millon sales for a new IP is not that surprising these days. As the 10 million figure is probably reflecting the life time sales of the game. So for example if the game sell the first 4 million at full price and the next 6 million unit at half price, in terms of making money it only roughly made the same as 7 million units sold at full price.

Using the the chart below a Third Party game needing 7 million units sales to break even would equal a production/marketing budget of 189 Million dollars. That cost may also include some set aside to run the servers as well. That figure may seem a lot but the latest Call of Duty supposedly cost in excess of $250 million to release for example.
