Forums - Gaming - “Certain” AAA IP Needs 10 Million Copies to Break Even says

Watch Dogs or Destiny.

Super Mario 3D World clearly. Them glass pipes are expensive.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I think it's just hyperbole. But when you think of how many studios lost money and folded during the 7th gen of gaming, you have to wonder how far off Cliff really is. The business model is flawed and there's simply too many $60 games for them all to be profitable. Even though I've heard talk that the 8th gen will be easier to develop for, I still suspect that it will be survival of the fittest and a lot more companies will be purchased or shut down.

Every Final Fantasy is a new IP in theory. And Square said they will release Final Fantasy XV sequels.

damnnn FFXV never crossed my mind for a second! (go figure..) could be that, since its been in devolepment since freaking 2006!

They obviously spend way too much then. Few franchises can sell like that. GTA, COD and Mario and that's really it.

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I think he´s making shit up.

10 million must be the sales expectations, but that number JUST to break even?...I don´t believe it for a second.

Actually, it's definitely Destiny

AAA MMOs are expensive as hell. Knights of the old Republic was PC only and cost like 200 mill, so Destiny could easily be 250 on it's own.

This is probably accurate

He then acknowledged that out of control budgets were the real problem in the industry and apologized to everyone for being such a doofus on the used games issue... right?

Sounds like bullshit to me. Only game that could come close to that is GTAV and its not new and wasn't at e3. No way Destiny or Titanfall cost that much.

Agreed on both points.

He's obviously just blowing smoke in an attempt to justify his earlier retarded remarks.

All three Assassin's Creed games were comfortably over 10 million each, all three Sims on PC alone over 10 million each, The last two Fifas broke 10 million each with absolute ease, all home Gran Turismos with the exception of GT2 seem to pass 10 million with ease, main installment Pokemon excluding Black and White 2 if that even counts tend to go well over, and both Half-Lifes went well over 10 million.

It's definitely a very hard number for very very few though, I agree. I don't see any new IP that looks even close to having 10 million as a sure bet. Maybe Destiny, but that could very easily not break 8 million tbh, and I really don't see something like Watchdogs repeating the kind of success Ubisoft had for Assassin's Creed.
