| RolStoppable said: Region lock is a less significant problem than the lack of localisations. Just look at the Vita and, for example, the Tales games it has. People could import the games from Japan, but they don't, because they can't read Japanese. A region lock only becomes a problem, if games aren't localized. Well, there's one exception and that's people who travel between different regions and thus can't buy games from the local market, if their system is from a different region. |
Rol, your taking away from people things to complain about. How could you be such a cruel beast?
Not even remotely similar. Region Locking doesn't really dissuade too many people from buying a console. But DRM was an industry wide power move to remove consumer rights.
Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:
If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.
If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.
it's not that important, people just want something to pick on and right now its about region locking.
it would be nice to have it region free but honestly we get games faster now so its not that important unless you want games that never release outside of japan

Nintendo are also still bad at getting Japanese games to the US, and in any case the original words/sounds are often better (also consider completely inaccurate translation of AWDS by NA, faithful one by EU). By not doing it, you encourage piracy and hacks so legit customers can get the games they wanted and bought running. Locking on the e-Shop makes no sense at all. Iwata's explanation here is one of the least convincing things I've ever read. Exactly what limitations is Nintendo under that MS and Sony can ignore? |
I never said NoA was good at bringing games over, I said they were getting better.
The thing is, Sony (and to an extent, MS) did have their consoles region locked before. I don't remember anyone complaining about that. Although, I always see people complaining about Nintendo's Region Lock.
The only thing I've ever paid for in another country on my PS3 is FF13 International because they fucked the localization to not have Japanese voice and I was super pissed about it, turns out that it was a waste of money anyways even though Japanese VO did sound better than the English one......
What I'm trying to say is that I don't give a rat's ass about region locking.

I feel sorry for your poor soul.
Nintendo and PC gamer

whats the point in playing a game you cant understand? I prefer my games in English so Im more than fine with region locking.
Give me some examples of not region locking having a positive impact in console or software sales. Since region locking is so bad, sales should back that up right?

Don't get me wrong, I thought FF13 was a decent 80/100, just not nearly the quality of past FF games, it was a waste of money only because I couldn't bring myself to finish the game again so soon after beating the NA version, but the VO is definitely better in Janpanese.

Region Locking is lame! Nuff said!
It's as simple as that.
It does NOT only affect 'hardcore gamers', it affects EVERY person in my position, someone working/studying/living/travelling in a foreign country for whatever reason (by choice, foreign wife, parents moving, company forcing you, military service, etc). My PS3 is Japanese, but all my games are UK/US (of course some Japanese as well).
- Are you a Japanese student in France but want to play your games in Japanese? Buy a French console and import games from Japan.
- Are you an American business man working in Japan but want to play your games in English? Buy a Japanese console and import your games.
- Did your handheld/console break while living in a foreign country? Just buy a new one immediately and play your old games without the fear of them not working!
- Are you studying Japanese/French/Spanish/English and want to use games as a way of improving? Import games without having to buy a new console from a specific region.
Don't understand what is so 'hardcore gamer' about the four examples above, but whatever. What I read in this thread is the typical 'it doesn't affect me so I don't give a damn'- mentality, which is tbh (sorry) totally retarded. There are many people who are not in the same position as you, and many people who, for a number of reasons, would like to import games from another country. Even something as trivial as a different BOXART might be a reason for some people.
Eventually, for me, this all boils down to freedom of choice/consumer freedom. I applaud every region free console, and will never support a region locked console. After PSP, DS, PS3, PS VITA and soon to be PS4, I do not support region locked consoles.
