DLC is fine. The problem is how it's implemented today and how it is going to be even worse. If we just look at Warner's patent, it's disgusting but that is just the start. And people actually try to defend that shit.

Most DLC could just be a mod if the developers provided modding tools for their titles.

I miss "expansion packs". - Where developers actually made an effort... Gave us value for our dollar... And I would purchase them without thinking.

Second hand has the exact same effect as piracy. The only difference is that one of them is socially excepted.

The Second Hand market is required to keep retailers like EB Games/Game Stop afloat, that is where they derive a large portion of their profits from... And without them, there goes a chunk of your physical sales.

I always buy second-hand, unless it's a title that I *must* own on launch. I.E. All of Blizzards and Biowares crap.

Besides, publishers/developers can't really whinge about the impacts of the second hand market, the video game market is worth 10's of billions, still growing and Publishers/Developers are constantly increasing their profits.

You can say the same thing about piracy.

Indeed I could. In-fact... There was a study done where Piracy could have potentially led to an increase in video game sales.
http://bigthink.com/david-ryan-polgar/video-game-piracy-may-actually-result-in-more-sales
and
http://www.dsogaming.com/news/piracy-actually-increases-legitimate-sales-of-video-games-according-to-eu-commisions-report/#more-103940

I mean... Minecraft is probably the best example. That was a free game, for everyone with the broswer-based "classic" version, people got hooked... And then Notch rolled out the Beta/Minecraft with a price tag attached that we sort of know today.

I am not a supporter of piracy though. But if I couldn't afford to buy video games, you bet'cha I would do it.

There are people that defend impossible things, even when that goes against their interests. I remember during the last gen of consoles, how some greedy publishers compared the second hand market with piracy, and how some users here totally agreed and used that fallacy over and over again.

Anyway, there's a spanish saying, "Cada minuto nace un tonto", which would be something like "Every minute a fool is born", and that is clearly visible in cases like these.

Second hand has the exact same effect as piracy. The only difference is that one of them is socially excepted.

The second hand market is legal and, unlike piracy, actually provides an economic benefit to all parts involved in the transaction.

I honestly don't see how the videogames used market is any different from the one for movies, music (back then cassettes, CDs, etc were a thing) or even things like cars or houses, and I don't recall Ford or BMW bashing the second hand market even during bad times when their profits fall like a rock.

AMD Reports Third Quarter 2017 Financial Results
https://www.techpowerup.com/238143/amd-reports-third-quarter-2017-financial-results
AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) today announced revenue for the third quarter of 2017 of $1.64 billion, operating income of $126 million and net income of $71 million, and diluted earnings per share of $0.07. On a non-GAAP(1) basis, operating income was $155 million, net income was $110 million, and diluted earnings per share was $0.10.

"Strong customer adoption of our new high-performance products drove significant revenue growth and improved financial results from a year ago," said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO. "Our third quarter new product introductions and financial execution mark another important milestone as we establish AMD as a premier growth company in the technology industry."

AMD made a profit! And all by themselves! Let's hope they can stay in the black to give Intel and (hopefully) Nvidia proper competition.

Because it is socially acceptable. Some things have existed so long thjat people are treating it as tradition and would never let go. 2nd hand market is inherently harmful to businesses but it has always existed, so it stays. Something being legal does not represent its morality.

Compare it with smoking. If smoking didn't exist and someone would introduce it today, it would be immediately banned because it is inherently harmful to everything. But smoking is legal despite its harmfulness just because it has been around for so long and as such is socially accepable.

You could argue that 2nd hand is accepted because it's pro-consumer but that's bull. Nobody cares about consumer protection or things would be different around here.

Second  hand or used market exist because of common sense. If I purchase a product that product becomes mine (the product, not the tech, IPs not anything like that), and as such I can do whatever I want with it. And selling a product I no longer use or want is one of the many things I can do with it.

And don't use the license card on this because its futile. The EU Court of justice said that you can do it in 2012. Of course, that's here, in the US things are different, but that's their problem.

And let's not compare it with smoking, please, because that's a very complicated subject that's anything but as simple as you may it look like. For example, here in Spain, tobacco was already considered illegal shortly after its introduction and people were condemned for smoking, yet that had little to no effect on its use, so they had to overrule it. And we're talking about a time when the Spanish Inquisition was in charge of those kinds of crimes...

Nowadays, banning tobacco is impossible. Not only would drug dealers be more than happy to add tobacco to they rich, and deadly, catalog of substances, but taxes on tobacco (and alcohol) play such an important role on our countries income, that they can't really do without them.
