I am now certain The Blood of Dawnwalker's time limit should've just been a setting, after hearing about Rebel Wolves' attempts to thread the needle
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/i-am-now-certain-the-blood-of-dawnwalkers-time-limit-shouldve-just-been-a-setting-after-hearing-about-rebel-wolves-attempts-to-thread-the-needle/
Listen—I like The Blood of Dawnwalker, I've had a pretty good time with it thus far, but by far its most interesting mechanic from the preview I played, the time limit, is by far the least impactful element of the full game. It's still kinda there, you still kinda need to keep an eye on it, but short of doing a full completionist sweep of the worldmap? It doesn't really stop you from doing what you want to do.
And hey, I understand why some folks didn't like that, and moved faster than a hungry vampire in a blood bank to mod it out of their games. But I actually wanted to go the other way—I wanted it to be harsher. And to hear that it was harsher at some point in development actually makes me kinda disappointed.

Yeah, I also wish that time limit was harsher - I finished the game, and never really felt worried for time after killing first boyar, so I really went wild on doing all sort of things. With less time that would really make me choose some things over the others and stick to the plan, which would match initial narrative pressure much better.

Age of Empires Dev Has Half of Studio Slashed, Project Cancelled Amid Xbox Layoffs

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2026/09/age-of-empires-dev-has-half-of-studio-slashed-project-cancelled-amid-xbox-layoffs

"According to former employees, the dev has lost roughly half of its team, and now sits under the Activision umbrella. Its latest unannounced project, thought to be Age of Empires 5, has been cancelled."

While I agree with majority of the lay offs that MS has been dishing out, this one does sadden me. The "age of team" has done wonders to bring back classic games that I grew up with and as far as I could tell, the definitive editions weren't flops relative to their budget and expectations. Yea they weren't heavy hitters and sadly, that is likely why the team has been laid off. But man, there was something there for us RTS folks.

I may regret saying this but, in case you're not aware of it, there's work-in-progress photomode mod for the game.

The biggest problem, as far as I see it, is that Age of Empires II is still the favorite and most played game in the franchise. So, why "wasting" money making new games when they can just make more DLCs for AoE2 with less people?

It's sad, but that's likely what MSoft saw.

In other news, have you all realized that, with this new round of layoffs, MSoft no longer has any game studio? Any studio that was under MSoft management has been relocated and now sits under Bethesda, Activision or King's umbrella.

At least there's one thing Microsoft has done right:

Microsoft's approach to age verification in Australia is further proof that Valve is taking the everloving piss
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/microsofts-approach-to-age-verification-in-australia-is-further-proof-that-valve-is-taking-the-everloving-piss/
Many are justifiably annoyed about Steam's new age verification requirements in Australia. Whereas most platforms and shopfronts offer several ways to verify one's age, Valve offers only one, and it's amusingly ill-suited to the Australian market. To prove that you're over 18 years old and thus, legally allowed to purchase games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Doom Eternal or Rimworld, you need to provide details for an active credit card.

The problem? Very few Australians use credit cards.

Even if you opened your Steam account as far back as 2003 and own a handful of R18+ games already, Steam will still require that credit card.

I don't want to big up Microsoft for doing slightly more than the bare minimum, but an email I received overnight does at least cast renewed light on how terrible Valve's approach is. An email from Microsoft regarding my "Microsoft Age Verification Status" had this to say:

"Due to your longstanding account activity, we’ve estimated your profile to be an adult account and updated its age verification status to “Verified.” At this time, you are no longer required to complete further age verification for uninterrupted access to features across certain Microsoft products, including Microsoft and Xbox storefronts."

It's for the best. Other than Forza and Age of Empires, the studios under them continuously made mid-bad games. If the rumours of the next xbox basically being a PC is true, then they might just be a contend on being a platform holder and giving up on games entirely.

Tired of GPU price increases yet? Well, then, here's the bad news: they're getting even more expensive, and do so even faster than before:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8tMVS2O9gc

Seriously, at those prices, who in their right mind still buys an NVidia GPU unless it's specifically for professional CUDA applications (which can by now also be emulated on AMD GPUs btw)? Only one that can make sense is the 5060Ti 8GB in some regions as the price difference to both the 5060 and the 9060XT 8GB is pretty low, but the rest has priced itself into the trash tier.

Between that and the crunch comment, it feels weird to see how a well received game can be kind of sabotaged by its own CEO.

Like, just shut up man, you don't need to go out and say these things.
