Ubisoft always finds new ways to disappoint. I honestly can't imagine Linux cheaters being a significant issue.

It's an almost 10 years old game that, as far as I know, uses Anti-cheat... which is supported by Linux.

At this point I no longer know what Ubisoft is trying to do and why, but they're sure slowly getting closer and closer to be irrelevant.

Tho I have to admit that their turn-based Rainbow Six game, made by the studio thatdid the Mario & Rabbids games, looks good.

I'm guessing the anti-cheat doesn't work as well on Linux, so they'll just kill the game on Linux entirely. Seems entirely reasonable, definitely.

I applaud Ubisoft for doing that R6 game, but personally I'm very unlikely to ever purchase/play it because of Ubi's stupid launcher policy. They've definitely missed out on some money from me because of their launcher and will continue to do so.

Steam may have leaked achievements for countless forthcoming PC games via a third party site, including Persona 6, Ace Combat 8, and even some unannounced games
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/steam-may-have-leaked-achievements-for-countless-forthcoming-pc-games-via-a-third-party-site-including-persona-6-ace-combat-8-and-even-some-unannounced-games/
Exophase, a site dedicated to tracking achievements for games across all major platforms including Steam, appears to have been flooded with a bunch of achievements lists it really shouldn't have yet. These include a huge—and importantly, yet to be unverified—list of major forthcoming games including Persona 6, Deus Ex Remastered, Horizon Hunters Gathering, Judas, Kingdom Hearts 4, and many more.
Among those, possibly the biggest surprise is Persona 6. It doesn't even have a release window yet, but its achievements list—assuming it's as legitimate as it looks—is rife with plausible spoilers. You have been warned: there is a lot in there, considering Atlus hasn't even shown gameplay footage yet.
Recent updates
Since publishing this article, the creator of Balatro, localthunk, has confirmed the game speculated to be a Balatro-related project is not, in fact, a Balatro-related project. "Just thought I’d let you know that the only thing I’m working on these days is a big content update for Balatro. The game you’ve reported on is not affiliated with me or Balatro at all. Plenty of people like to emulate the Balatro design language and that’s all this is."

Corporations want to kill physical media because it suits them, but Big Box PC game packaging just got a second chance
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/corporations-want-to-kill-physical-media-because-it-suits-them-but-big-box-pc-game-packaging-just-got-a-second-chance/
If you were alive and sentient in the nineties you probably harbour some fondness for the "big box" PC games of yore. Back then, rather than buy an ephemeral digital license for a game, you'd head to a store to buy a huge box bedecked in lavish art, inside which you'd find a handful of 3.5-inch floppy discs or a CD-ROM, usually a substantial glossy manual, and if you were lucky, maybe even some extras like stickers or drink coasters.
There's been renewed interest in the ye olde big box PC game, especially in the wake of Sony's announcement it will discontinue physical PlayStation games. Some proactive folk have gone viral for manufacturing their own physical Steam games. Now GOG has offered its own alternative: printable big boxes based on scans of real commercial packages from the golden era of game packaging.
In collaboration with Big Box Collection—which is a fan-operated trove of big box 3D scans—GOG is now offering those 3D scans with five entries in its GOG Preservation Program. These include the newly added Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Armikrog, while games already in the Preservation Program including Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, and Myst will also receive the treatment.
"We’re delivering flat, printable versions of the same box art, so you can cut, fold, and glue your own physical big box at home," reads GOG's announcement. "A proper papercraft project for anyone who misses shelves full of PC game boxes."

Unofficial PC Version of Wave Race 64 Available for Download
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/unofficial-pc-version-of-wave-race-64-available-for-download/
Another day, another unofficial PC version of a classic console game. This time, we’re looking at an unofficial PC port of the fantastic arcade speedboat racing game, Wave Race 64. So, let’s dive in.
This PC version was created by statically recompiling the game’s MIPS code into C with N64Recomp. It runs on N64ModernRuntime, using RT64 as the renderer and RecompFrontend for the menus and controller support.
Now, the good news is that the game supports widescreen monitors and unlocked frame rates. The game keeps its own update rate. It runs at 30 Hz during races and 20 Hz in the menus and Time Trial mode. RT64 then smooths each object’s movement between game frames, allowing the game to run at your display’s refresh rate. The physics, camera, and timers are all left untouched.
Wave Race 64 was one of the best-looking games of Nintendo 64. At that time, it had some of the best water effects. And, since this game never came out on PC, it’s cool to have an unofficial PC version of it.
What’s also cool is that the latest version of this PC port comes with an HD texture pack. Brian Tate has improved 1,828 HD texture mappings across 1,806 images. He has also replaced nine recordings and added native rendering. This includes Direct3D 12 on Windows and Metal on Mac. HD textures, custom music, and high water are enabled by default on a fresh install.
Those interested can download it here (Github). As with most recompilations, it does not include any in-game assets. This means you’ll need to own the original game and provide your own ROM file to play it. Right now, this PC port is only compatible with Wave Race 64 (USA) (Rev A).

With more than one million copies sold just a few days after its release, a "very positive" rating on Steam, and an enviable 83% review score from PC Gamer, vampiric horror RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker is a hit. And less than one week after its debut, developer Rebel Wolves is already planning what comes next.

Marvel Rivals breaks its 17 month streak of adding 2 heroes per season, but its creative director reassures fans it's not 'the new normal'

Marvel Rivals' massive hero roster and regular character additions are some of its defining features. So it comes as a huge surprise that NetEase has decided to forgo tradition for the sake of focusing on improving its foundations.
For the first time in eight seasons—that's 17 months—Marvel Rivals will just be getting one hero, Gorr the God Butcher, in a season. "We're locking our crosshairs on just Gorr the God Butcher," creative designer Guangyun Chen says in a dev diary. "In the first half of the season we'll be rolling out one new hero and one new map. In the second half our focus will shift to phase 3 and phase 4 of the Path to Doomsday events. These will feature two brand-new game modes, with specific details dropping closer to the start of season 10.5."

Well, it's not like we didn't know already, but it's good to see some tests proving it.

With that said, som reviewers tried very hard to melt their 12x6 connector doing all kinds of things on them, and failed. Because of that, while  I don't argue with their claim that the 8xpin connector is safer, a single sample result is not a definitive proof.

The fact that the 9070XT, the only card that uses both connectors, only has had melted connectors in units using the 12x6 plug, tho, now that is a bigger proof of the qualities of the 8xpin connectors.

Very well deserved.

However, it's growing at less than half the speed of a 5060Ti or 5070 and slower than the 5080. Basically it just beats it's direct rival and the atrocious 5050 despite the NVIdia cards costing either as much for half the performance (5060Ti 16GB) or twice as much for just slightly more power (5080).

With those Nvidia prices the RDNA4 cards in general, not just the 9070XT, should grow much faster, but I doubt that's gonna happen.

I agree. Of course in practice, having a launcher implies the need to use their service, and it's the service I don't really trust. Ubisoft doesn't seem the stablest of companies with their challenges in the recent years, and if Ubisoft ever goes down, that doesn't bode well for their games either. Of course that's not even the only problematic scenario - they could, at any moment, decide having their own platform isn't worth it. It's not likely to happen, especially in the short term, but it could happen. I guess there's other issues as well, but those are the main ones, I think.

Steam now requires Australian users to have a credit card to purchase R18+ games, and no, a simple bank debit card won't work
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/steam-now-requires-australian-users-to-have-a-credit-card-to-purchase-r18-games-and-no-a-simple-bank-debit-card-wont-work/
Valve rolled out 18+ age verification for Australian Steam users yesterday, which was inevitable: both PlayStation and Xbox have already done so and it is, after all, illegal not to, with fines up to AU$50 million at stake. But unlike PlayStation and Xbox, which offer a small handful of ways to verify one's adulthood, Valve has only one: you must own a credit card.
And no, your debit card won't work, or at least, mine doesn't. You'll need an actual credit card: a card that uses money you don't have, versus a card that uses money you do. It makes a bit of sense, because Australians need to be 18 to qualify for a credit card, whereas teenagers can own a debit card.
But there are other complications: You may be an adult and not qualify for a credit card because you don't earn enough money. You may not meet a particular bank's credit assessment criteria, as per CommBank. You may have a poor credit history. Or, you may simply not want to have a credit card because the prospect of spending money not in your possession is odd to you. If you fall under any of these categories—and I do the latter—then sorry: Valve won't sell you R18+ videogames.

Bloodborne PC Remaster V1.01 Mod Available for Download
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/bloodborne-pc-remaster-v1-01-mod-available-for-download/
Modder ‘fromsoftserve’ has released a new version of his amazing graphics overhaul remaster mod for Bloodborne. This is a must-have mod for everyone who wants to experience this PS4-only game on PC. So, let’s take a closer look at it.
Version 1.01 adds new material work to the Hunter’s Dream and large parts of Central Yharnam. It also changes many shininess maps for different surfaces. Some have been replaced with higher-resolution versions. Some now have less specular shine, while others have more.
Those interested can go ahead and download the mod from this link (Nexus Mods). At the end of the article, you can also find a video for it. This video highlights most of its enhancements, so be sure to watch it.

Ikea made a Skyrim mod starring Matt Berry as a sentient shelf named Kallax Storageborn
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/the-elder-scrolls/ikea-made-a-skyrim-mod-starring-matt-berry-as-a-sentient-shelf-named-kallax-storageborn/
The brands are at it again but this time I'm inclined to let it slide, because it's so nonsensical (which is a nice way of saying dumb) that I can't help but be charmed. Ikea, the Swedish furniture-and-stuff giant, has released a mod for Skyrim called Kallax Storageborn: A new companion who is also a shelf, who is also voiced by Matt Berry.
If you think that sounds weird, it gets weirder, because this mod doesn't just add a companion, it includes an entirely new questline built around the character. Becoming encumbered in the game, as will inevitably happen eventually, will give you the opportunity to visit an abandoned dwemer emporium, where you'll embark upon a quest to "unravel the origins of a mysterious master."
During this quest, you'll assemble Kallax Storageborn, a companion "with unfathomable storage capacity," who can be summoned with a newly-added Thu'um—Skyrim's famous voice of power—even when he's not your active companion. Your ultimate goal: Tidy up the clutter plaguing the realm of Nords and Dragonborn.
The mod also adds new loot including the Meatball Helmet, which sadly I don't have an image of, and the mighty Allenblade, which I do:
>> Besides the screenshot with an Allenblade, there’s also a 1 minute trailer for the mod, which is available from the Creations page.

The Songs of the Past add-on for The Witcher 3, which will be out next year, promises to let us explore a whole new region and get to know Dandelion better than ever. I'm more interested in a brand new chunk of world than intimate moments with the bard, but more Witcher 3 is more Witcher 3 even if the focus isn't on everyone's actual favorite character. (Johnny the Godling, of course.)
Songs of the Past was shown off at Gamescom, where our Joshua Wolens had a peek and said it looked real good. The rest of us will have to wait for other opportunities, like the one that's been announced as part of the PAX Australia schedule reveal. On Saturday, October 11, attendees will be able to join members of CD Projekt and DLC developer Fool's Theory for a behind-closed-doors live demo of Songs of the Past, and a panel discussion to follow.

The next game by the creators of Steins;Gate is an entirely vibe-coded FPS slopfest

Juggernaut is a forthcoming free-to-play boomer shooter clearly styled after Wolfenstein engine FPSes of yore. It's about shooting huge waves of zombies in flat, pixellated arenas. As far as modern retro shooters go it looks unremarkable, though it will be released alongside the Juggernaut Assets Maker, a paid tool for making your own levels and adding your own assets. "Make it more Japanese" the Steam page promises. "Make it sexier".
It's the work of Mages Inc, a Japanese studio best known for the Steins;Gate series of visual novels; it has also worked on recent iterations of the Corpse Party series. Mages Inc generally specialises in visual novels, though it has released at least one Xbox 360 action game that was never released outside of Japan.
But to what extent Mages Inc can actually be credited (or blamed) for their first foray into the first-person shooter genre is ripe for debate, because here's Juggernaut's AI Disclosure

Blizzard Entertainment's union—in conjunction with the Communications Workers of America (CWA)—has just signed a landmark contract with the studio to, among other things, force it to "discuss, evaluate, and bargain" any time it wants to introduce generative AI in the workplace.

Once again, I'm mergin the two PCGamer posts into one:
