Owner of itch.io accuses newly launched alternative w3itch.io of theft
https://www.pcgamer.com/owner-of-itchio-accuses-newly-launched-alternative-w3itchio-of-theft/
Here's another contender for Web3 is going just great, the satirical website that documents each new disaster related to the ongoing blockchain-based reinvention of the internet. In its own words, w3itch.io is an "open marketplace for independent game creators" where anyone can sell games and set their own prices. Sounds a lot like itch.io, a popular website that already exists, except for one key difference: w3itch.io plans to incorporate NFTs, cryptocurrency payments, and other web3 technology.
Itch hasn't been shy about making its position plain, declaring that NFTs are a scam earlier this year. Given that Steam has banned games with NFTs or cryptocurrency, it's natural that developers desperate to incorporate the blockchain into games want an alternative. It seems unlikely w3itch.io will be that alternative for long, as the site looks suspiciously similar to itch.io and its owner has admitted to using itch.io's CSS files.
Unity lays off hundreds of employees to 'realign' resources
https://www.pcgamer.com/unity-lays-off-hundreds-of-employees-to-realign-resources/
Unity has laid off 4% of its total workforce, with at least 200 people across the world losing their jobs.
The exact numbers are still unknown—Unity's total employee count is not provided, though a quarterly report in March 2022 noted that the software developer had 5,864 full-time workers. A report by Kotaku ballparks the number of layoffs at around 300 to 400 employees, with those in the AI and engineering departments taking the biggest hits.

Dark Souls 3 gets a new Bloodborne-inspired mod, available for download
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/dark-souls-3-gets-a-bloodborne-inspired-mod-available-for-download/
Dark Souls and Bloodborne fans, here is something for you today. Modder ‘Bradysheaslays’ has released a brand new mod for Dark Souls 3, aiming to make it feel and play like Bloodborne.
Going into more details, this mod overhauls all of Dark Souls 3’s features. The mod alters the game’s lighting, weapons, outfits, music, and even your character’s movement. As such, DS3 will now play and feel just like a Bloodborne for PC. Players will be able to dash and shoot blood vials like a hunter.
Do note that this is a different mod from the one we shared back in February 2022. From the looks of it, Ashen Blood will be slightly better as it will also pack enemies from Bloodborne.
New screenshots from an upcoming fan remaster of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

Modder ‘Andrey0007’ has been working on a fan remaster of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, and shared some new screenshots from it. These screenshots will give you a glimpse at what this fan remaster aims to achieve.
According to the modder, this overhaul mod will replace almost all of the game’s textures with 4K versions of them. Theoretically, Andrey0007 will use AI techniques in order to upscale the original textures. Moreover, the modder will create some new textures for some surfaces and/or objects.
Players can also expect new sounds (from mutants to dialogs and weapons, replacing with high-quality ones, creating and adding new ones), better NPCs (also with some new NPC models), better shaders effects, and more.
Call of Duty 2 – Original 2005 vs Fan Remake 2022 Graphics Comparison Trailer
https://www.dsogaming.com/videotrailer-news/call-of-duty-2-original-2005-vs-fan-remake-2022-graphics-comparison-trailer/
Last week, TeaserPlay shared a video from a fan remake of Call of Duty 2 in Unreal Engine 5. And yesterday, they shared a comparison video between the original 2005 and the fan remake versions of it.
This comparison video showcases the graphical improvements that this fan remake brings to the table. It also shows what indie devs can achieve on Epic’s latest engine. After all, we’re comparing here a product from a triple-A company against a fan remake.
For this fan remake, TeaserPlay has recreated a number of environments from COD2. They also took advantage of Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen, Nanite and Ray Tracing (for reflections) capabilities.
>> They're like two different games, seriously. The maps have changed so much that they look completely different.
Id won't do it, so hobbyists ported Carmack's final Doom game to PC
https://www.pcgamer.com/id-wont-do-it-so-hobbyists-ported-carmacks-final-doom-game-to-pc/
Doom RPG is one of those odd side-stories in videogame history, a project born from id Software co-founder John Carmack's relentlessly tinkering nature. It was a mobile game from the pre-smartphone era, and the game's origins are as simple as Carmack's wife buying him a slightly better phone: which naturally set our boy to thinking.
(...)
The game was released in September 2005 on phones that supported BREW, Java ME, or J2ME. It was a decent success and garnered several 'mobile game of the year' awards, because it was fundamentally a decent game: indeed, Carmack and Fountainhead were pleased enough that they'd go on to build a separate RPG series on this foundation, Orcs & Elves, as well as Wolfenstein RPG and Doom II RPG.
As is the case with many early mobile titles, Doom RPG was essentially locked to those platforms and left behind as they became obsolete. You haven't been able to play it anywhere for at least a decade. And that for some Doom fans, and especially considering the Carmack-led provenance of this title, would simply never do.
The coding wizards at GEC.Inc are dedicated to Doom history and all the various weird versions of the game, at various points doing things like reverse-engineering the source code for the PlayStation port, or digging out unused monsters from Doom 64.
Now comes their greatest achievement, which has been in the works for a good while: "As we promised, the Doom RPG port for PC is finally here," writes Erick194 (thanks, Ars Technica). "Created using SDL2 and BREW version doomrpg.mod original file reverse-engineering [...] You need to get the original files to be converted into a friendly format for the port."
