Open the vaults: the first two Fallouts return to Steam in high-res with Cloud saves

Oh, the house Bethesda built for Fallout was good, very good. But it never did recreate the same junktown vibe of those ‘90s jaunts through the Wasteland with Black Isle.

Now the publishers have wrestled the last few rights to the series from Interplay’s remaining fingers, Fallouts 1, 2 and Tactics have come back to Steam with their skin still attached - and a few extra doo-dahs in their inventories.

The Evil Within Hands-on: like a funfair House of Horrors

Comments1

The Evil Within is more funfair House of Horrors than it is waking nightmare. At one point I was searching a gothic manor house for brains that I’d sap of juice to open a vault door while avoiding traps, like a meat grinder hidden behind a set of double doors. It was a little silly considering this is from the maker of Resident Evil.

I couldn’t help but warm to its clumsy scares and crude, cliched environments, full of blood and ghosts. However, it’s all held back by a frustrating camera and mechanics designed to hobble you.

Sledgehammer are "not shying away from what CoD is" for Advanced Warfare's level design

Comment

Do you remember ‘All Ghilled Up’? The thirteenth mission of the very first Modern Warfare, it stuck us behind the moustachioed upper lip of Captain Price. Moving to a hotel vantage point from the outskirts of Pripyat, it exemplified what we now recognise as CoD form: a breathless slide down a pre-dictated path.

The Advanced Warfare demo showed to press at E3 featured a level a lot like it - and developers Sledgehammer aren’t ashamed to admit that they’ve taken their cues from CoD history.

“We are trying to change things up, but we’re also not shying away from what the series is,” said co-founder Glen Schofield.

Just how alpha is the Star Citizen alpha?

Comments69

This is not a good start. My screen’s flashing with the telltale colourful triangles of a graphics card glitch. I can barely make out the ship hangar behind the collaged curtain of bugs.

Since installing Star Citizen’s dogfighting module two weeks ago (a trying experience in and of itself) I’ve only once managed to launch my ship into space. Every other attempt has been met with dropped server connections, crippling graphical artifacts, and crashes.

Bugs are to be expected, this is a pre-alpha release of the module, but after six months of delays I wasn’t expecting the bugs to be this bad. Especially when RSI creative director Chris Roberts said "It would be foolish to release an unstable build, even if pre-alpha for the sake of meeting an internal deadline."

Battlefield Hardline single player won't be the "linear rollercoaster that's been done before"

Comment

We’ve been here before, in this exact spot. DICE’s Battlefield 4 campaign would have us “feel smart”, we were told before release - let us choose our own approach.

And it did, sorta. But it was clear it still owed a debt to CoD and to Medal of Honor - games Battlefield played nothing like in multiplayer - and Visceral seem to want to put a stop to that in Hardline.

They’ve used that game’s cops and robbers hook to ensure we’re no longer following orders. Instead, they say, we can expect to be making tactical choices - some of which don’t involve shooting every man in the room. Gasp.

It begins: the Steam Summer Sale has arrived and even Dead Rising 3 is getting in on the action

It’s here. The Steam Summer Sale has arrived. Do you know where your wallet is? Mine’s locked inside a matryoshka-like safe, which in turn is wrapped up in chains and locked by a key that I have fed to a snake which I have sent on a plane to a distant land.

The twist for this Summer Sale is team-based shenanigans. Everyone will be assigned a team, randomly, and these teams compete for rewards. The team with the most points - gained from crafting Summer Adventure badges - wins each day, and 30 members will receive 3 games from their wish list.

But enough faffing: what about the deals?

Lego Minifigures Online open beta: bricks without substance

LEGO Minifigures Online has just hit open beta. Those of you without wee ‘uns can probably stop reading right about now. It’s not that LEGO can’t be enjoyed by adults, but that Minifigures Online only has one demographic in mind, and none of them can buy cigarettes or whisky.

I didn’t take my own advice, however, and dived in for a couple of hours. I’ve enjoyed endless hours of fun with TT's LEGO series and hoped that Minifigures Online would strike the same balance between simplicity and fun.

It doesn’t.

Surviving the World Cup doldrums with World of Tanks: Football Edition

I’m one of those miserable sods who gets a lot more pleasure out of moaning about the World Cup than watching it. So I was more surprised than anyone that I found myself very happy that this competition of footballs and men in shorts was bringing me no small amount of joy. And it’s all thanks to World of Tanks and the game’s temporary football mode

For the last few days, I’ve been ramming an oversized football around a well-trimmed pitch. In a tank. It’s the most I’ve ever enjoyed the sport. And it’s provided some of my favourite World of Tanks moments.

IndieBox gambles on a resurgence of interest in boxed videogames

Andy Chalk at 06:30 on 20 June 2014

I like videogames that come in boxes. I liked shopping for them, too, running to the nearest EB Games store and riffling through the preowned section (when it had a preowned section for PC) to see what bits of overlooked gaming goodness I could dig up. The thrill of the hunt more than made up for the relative lack of convenience, and that's a feeling the IndieBox team is hoping to take advantage of with its new and very unusual boxed-game subscription service.

Feudal Rage: War Of The Vikings’ New Berserker Class

Elder Scrolls fans petition Bethesda: put Arena and Daggerfall on Steam for 20th anniversary

What do Elton John, Aretha Franklin and The Elder Scrolls all have in common? If you said poor draw distance, you’re wrong and very rude. The correct answer is a birthday in March.

The Elder Scrolls was 20 this year, and Bethesda celebrated with an expensive box set and a  sweet blog post from Todd Howard. But a subsection of the series’ community have begun politely nudging the developers to do a little more: namely, release the first four games of the series for free. Watch Dogs E3 2012 graphics could have left it "less enjoyable or even unstable"

Comments3

Nine minutes of in-dev footage fueled two years of expectation ahead of Watch Dogs’ release - but that gave way to slow-burn fumes of outrage in some quarters upon its release last month. Even on Ultra settings, the finished game didn’t match the luscious lighting and dramatic depth of field seen in the E3 demo - and modders soon discovered those effects had been hidden in Watch Dogs’ files.

Why? That’s the question Ubisoft have sought to answer today.

Get HDMI 4K@60Hz with Nvidia's new drivers, but there's a catch

Comments1

A new workaround has cropped up in Nvidia’s latest drivers for Kepler GPUs that allows the cards to output to 4K TV displays at 4K@60Hz over HDMI 1.4. This is instead of the 4K@30Hz that they were limited to before because of the HDMI bandwidth availability.

What’s surprising about this is that it’s something that wasn’t expected to happen until HDMI 2.0, which is not featured in current cards. It’s not magic; it’s just that a compromise has been made, lowering the image quality.

Minecrafting: Getting Started with Feed The Beast

Comment

Feed the Beast is exactly what it sounds like, provided you’re aware that the beast in question is Mojang’s behemoth Minecraft, and the food that you are piling into it is mods. It’s a launcher that shovels in tweaks, rebuilds, and textures like burly men fuelling the furnaces of a great mechanical monstrosity that bursts and evolves with each additional scoop of coal.

For anyone shy of intermediate Minecraft expertise, it is potentially a little confusing and frightening too. Not only is it a new front end with lots of buttons to deal with, but it also changes the way Minecraft can function in a manner you probably haven’t even considered to fantasise yet. Portal guns, self-automated production lines, alternate dimensions, and beekeeping await you within Feed the Beast. But before all that, you need to get started.

Queue Dodge: Riot paying new hires 10 percent of their annual salary to quit

Comment

A decade ago, I quit my job as an Assistant Manager at Blockbuster (who?) and jumped into a marketing job at the recommendation of my girlfriend at the time. It was one of the worst job moves I ever made. I got more money, but the job was soul-sucking, the atmosphere was unfriendly and there were none of the perks that I enjoyed at the previous job. But I stayed, because I needed the money. My work suffered, of course.

If I’d been working for Riot, things would have been very different - beyond the obvious stuff, of course. The League of Legends developer has initiated a new scheme called the “Queue Dodge,” where new hires are offered money to quit. Riot says this is a reinforcement of its culture.

Battlefield 4: Dragon's Teeth adds a floating restaurant and a vanishing lake

Battlefield 4’s upcoming expansion, Dragon’s Teeth, has nothing to do with the Argonautica. There will be no soldiers sprouting from canines or hunts for golden fleeces. Knowing this, as I do, makes me extremely sad.

It will, however, feature gunfights on a floating island and the ability to drain a lake. That makes the lack of Greek mythology easier to stomach.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8191/nvidia-kepler-cards-get-hdmi-4k60hz-support-kind-of

Personally, I fail to see the appeal of that to most of us. Sure, for those that have a 4K TV and an HTPC it makes sense, but for those with a Monitor that want to play at that resolution, I don't think the trade off is worth it. After all, most of the enthusiasts that game at that res have also choosen a monitor with an IPS panel to enjoy the colors, so why would they trade that image quality when they can simply use the DisplayPort conector?

Visceral defend Battlefield Hardline multiplayer: "It's not just a re-skin"

Over the weekend, Steve and Matt did their best to have an argument about the Battlefield Hardline beta, but failed miserably - both were in agreement that the multiplayer modes on show were cynical rehashes of the established Battlefield formula. Hardline, it seems, wears its cops and robbers conceit like a groucho mask: ready to be tossed aside as soon as the party starts.

Braben believes Elite: Dangerous' steep early access price was "the very best way to do it"

The price of a PC game used to be carved in biro by enthusiastic teenagers employed at brick-and-mortar games retailers. But early access has thrown pricing conventions into greater disarray than ever before.

Developers can’t seem to decide whether to pitch low, to compensate players for the bugs they’ll have to put up with, or high, to sell players on the idea of being VIPs.

Frontier fell into the latter camp with Elite: Dangerous, asking premium beta players to ‘join the elite’ for £100. David Braben acknowledges the approach might seem “cruel and merciless” - but says he doesn’t know of a better way to keep beta numbers manageable.
