Welp, here comes the socket fragmentation from AMD with AM4. It seems that the older motherboards such as the X370/X470 will NOT be compatible with the upcoming Zen 3 CPUs!

https://www.techpowerup.com/266710/amd-b550-chipset-detailed-its-ready-for-zen-3-older-am4-motherboards-not-compatible

I think that's just what the boards have to support. After all, most A320 boards seem to support Zen 2 chips just fine, and pretty much all B350 and X370 do, despite the slide saying they don't.

In other words, you're probably fine with a B450/X470. First Gen boards have pretty small ROMs which might run into problems to fit the firmware for the new chips (which already created some problems with Zen 2 chips on cheaper models), but the second gen is probably fine. It might just take a while until the boards get an update with Zen 4000 support.

Here's hoping. If nothing else, least this will give AMD and the Motherboard Vendors a lesson on how much space they might need for future BIOS's when moving onto AM5.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

GN did one of the more interesting comparison benchmarks between the Ryzen 3100 and 3300X. Both are 4 core 8 threads but 3100 has 2 CCX and 3300X has a single CCX. Some of the difference is kinda crazy with 24%+ difference at times. 3300X also beats 7700k at stock.

Bummer.

While I don't think that will have a huge impact in the total sales, it's quite obvious that the ones that know about this will hold their purchase and go straight to the 5000 series with AM5, DDR5, PCIe 5.0 and whatever AMD comes up with.

But let's not fool ourselves, many of the original boards weren't ready to handle 8 or more cores and they struggled with the newer processors. They had to put a line and say enough, even if it's just to avoid problems with people burning their mobos.

There is also the issue of space... Some board manufacturers only implemented a tiny amount of ROM storage and filled it up with pretty UI effects rather than microcode to support various CPU models...

So some boards actually had a firmware that supported one mix of CPU's and another firmware that supported another.
It was a mess, essentially board manufacturers tried to save a penny.

Another issue is of motherboard quality.
Take the Asus Crosshair for example... An AM2 motherboard, there was no guarantees it eventually would get support to run AM3 and AM3+ processors because other motherboards didn't, however Asus actually implemented pretty good power delivery which made it possible.

Basically this situation has always existed for AMD, it's up to the board manufacturers to implement support... And not all manufacturers care about support after the first 6 months of release... Plus not all boards are high-enough quality to support newer processors due to issues like power delivery.

Your mileage has always varied, you just need to keep an eye on your boards firmware to see if you can run something newer.
I saying that, I had an old Asrock board which never had a firmware update to support a rebadged Phenom 2 x4 as an Athlon 2 x4, yet it still ran, at the right clocks, just the CPU name was mis-reported.

Pretty bummed at this at this but not surprised. Looking more like I'm going to have to get a B550 board+new CPU.

Hoping Gigabyte will update my board though so I can put more money towards GPU and other nice things :P

Yep, the 3300X is the better choice all around, specially if you want to build a budget gaming PC.

Here's a review roundup for those that prefer other sources: https://videocardz.com/86840/amd-ryzen-3-3300x-and-ryzen-3-3100-review-roundup

And what's even funnier about the 7700K is that I read that some people are trying to sell their used ones... for twice what these two cost . Oh, my...

Same here. Was figuring Ryzen 4000 desktop would be the final model that would still work with my B450. We'll see what happens with pricing of the 3000 series, but I'm leaning towards holding out and going with a new mobo and APU or CPU+GPU now. Probably not until the 5000 series though.

Try turning off Windows 10's Game Mode if your games are stuttering or freezing
https://www.pcgamer.com/try-turning-off-windows-10s-game-mode-if-your-games-are-stuttering-or-freezing/
Back in 2017, Microsoft introduced a "performance-boosting" Game Mode with its Creators update for Windows 10. Now three years later, there is a growing number of users who say they are experiencing performance issues, not boosts, with Game Mode enabled.
As pointed out by Guru3D (via TechRadar), this is affecting several games, including Call of Duty: Warzone and League of Legends, according to various complaints. Game freezes and stuttering appear to be the main symptoms of whatever is going on.
Some users think this might be the root cause of issues that were previously attributed to GPU drivers for AMD's Radeon RX 5000 series.
"I built a new PC last year and I've been brutalized by the 5700 XT drivers ever since, or so I thought. Windows added a 'Game Mode' apparently, on by default, in some update, and after I disabled it tonight the difference is night and day. The CRAZY intermittent stutters are TOTALLY gone in my testing. I don't know if this is an established fix that many have tried but I figured I'd put it out there for anyone who doesn't know yet," a user wrote on Reddit.
Other people have chimed in saying they're experiencing similar issues, and that disabling Game Mode did the trick. In addition, an AMD engineer said they plan on investigating the situation.

MODS/EMULATORS

Doom Eternal Gameplay Overhaul Mod increases ammo capacity, improves double jump & more
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/doom-eternal-gameplay-overhaul-mod-increases-ammo-capacity-improves-double-jump-more/
A lot of gamers hated Doom Eternal due to its limited ammo capacity. id Software has decided to alter the gameplay so that players could use a wide range of weapons, as well as the chainsaw so they could refill their ammo. Thankfully for those people, though, there is a gameplay overhaul mod that you can download and bring the game closer to Doom 2016.
Created by modder ‘gladias9’, this gameplay overhaul mod brings a collection of tweaks. Most importantly, this mod increases the ammo capacity upgrades by roughly 50%. This basically means that you can now have more ammo to shoot demons instead of looting enemies.
In addition, this mod increases the height of double jump. This is a major gameplay tweak as it will allow you to traverse the levels with ease.
Furthermore, this mod reduces the cost of weapon upgrades. As such, players can unlock skills quicker so they can experiment with them in the sandbox.
>> You can get it from Nexus Mods.

The Witcher 3 Redux Version 2.6 released, brings numerous gameplay tweaks and improvements
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/the-witcher-3-redux-version-2-6-released-brings-numerous-gameplay-tweaks-and-improvements/
Modder ‘Aleks Vuckovic’ has released a brand new version of The Witcher 3 Redux. According to the release notes, Version 2.6 adds a new critical effect, Drain. Drain is basically the magic equivalent of Fatigue. This means that Drain is caused by critical effects such as Hypnosis or attacks from wraiths, and lowers Geralt’s Sign Intensity each time it is applied.
Version 2.6 also re-designs Yrden Skill “Supercharged Glyphs”, Leshen Decoction and Noonwraith Decoction. It also reworks the Burning Critical Effect, and increases Yrden slowdown cap from 45% to 50%. Furthermore, it lowers Grandmaster Griffin Gear 6/6 Sign Intensity Bonus from 100% to 50% and removes 20% damage reduction.
>> Available from Nexus Mods. By the way, the article also mentions another overhaul mod that... well, basically changes everything.

Part two of the Friday news:

Paris Games Week has been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic
https://www.pcgamer.com/paris-games-week-has-been-cancelled-because-of-the-covid-19-pandemic/
Paris Games Week isn't the most well-known videogame event in North America, but it's a big one: It attracted 317,000 visitors over five days in 2019. That's not going to happen this year, however, as organizers announced today that, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 event scheduled for October 23-27 has been cancelled.
>> It doesn't seem to be very popular in this forums either as it's cancellation didn't warrant a thread, unlike this other one:

Tokyo Game Show has been cancelled
https://www.pcgamer.com/tokyo-game-show-has-been-cancelled/
Tokyo Game Show will not go ahead this September, its organisers have confirmed. The 2020 event was scheduled to take place between September 24-27, but like E3 2020 and Gamescom, that will no longer happen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A replacement online event has been confirmed, with more details to come.
>> Signalstar is the one that has made a thread about it.

GTA Online's alien outfits are now free, so get out there and kill each other
https://www.pcgamer.com/gta-onlines-alien-outfits-are-now-free-so-get-out-there-and-kill-each-other/
One of the most ridiculous, and therefore best, things to happen recently in GTA Online is the eruption of a gang war between two factions of aliens. Except they're not really aliens, they're people dressed up in either green or purple body suits, and instead of beaming victims up for an anal probe they throw them into the back of a van, drive them out to the sticks, and beat the hell out of them.

Jonathan Frakes is here to tell you how sad PUBG's Dinoland is
https://www.pcgamer.com/jonathan-frakes-is-here-to-tell-you-how-sad-pubgs-dinoland-is/
Next time the circle's closing in Vikendi's Dinoland, spare a thought for its sordid history. In a new PUBG video fleshing out the theme park's history, we learn that it was once "the happiest place ever." But for reasons quite irrelevant to the 100 person bloodbaths that now take place in its vicinity, that happiness quickly turned to... despair.

Spaceship action RPG Drox Operative 2 announced
https://www.pcgamer.com/spaceship-action-rpg-drox-operative-2-announced/
While Blizzard summons Diablo, Crate Entertainment ushers in its Grim Dawn, and Grinding Gear Games follows the Path of Exile, Soldak Entertainment has been, relatively quietly, soldering away on its ambitious, not enormously attractive action RPGs, including Din's Legacy and Zombasite. But it's Drox Operative—an action RPG with spaceships—that concerns us today, as the developer has just announced a sequel.

Stuck in SnowRunner? Perhaps this tips trailer will help
https://www.pcgamer.com/stuck-in-snowrunner-perhaps-this-tips-trailer-will-help/
Travelling in the snow is hard. Really hard! That's why the only things mad enough to attempt it are Father Christmas, and the big, hulking trucks of terrain sim SnowRunner. The former cheats by using magical, flying reindeer, but the latter have to carve their way through the sloppy snow and mud. You, potentially a greenhorn player of the 'Runner series, might be finding this difficult. But publisher Focus Home have put out a handy tips video.

If Metro Exodus was set entirely on the train, it might look something like Keep It Alive: a game of powering through the post-apocalypse in a train carriage. As a train driver, well, more of a shoveller and a security guard, you have attend to multiple spinning plates, as the train advances from station to station in the world.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla creative director admits the 'gameplay' trailer was a letdown
https://www.pcgamer.com/assassins-creed-creative-director-admits-the-gameplay-trailer-was-a-letdown/
Ubisoft unveiled the much-anticipated Assassin's Creed Valhalla debut gameplay trailer during yesterday's Inside Xbox livestream, and to be blunt, it wasn't great. It was nice enough as trailers go, but as Chris observed there were maybe three seconds of gameplay through the entire thing, and I think he's being a little generous with that count.

The backlash was strong enough that creative director Ashraf Ismail took to Twitter to acknowledge that Ubisoft dropped the ball.

If you can cope with the fact that it's now 2020 (actually, we're all kind of struggling with that), you'll be pleased to hear that this latest entry in the series is currently free.
