But the engines are designed typically with console hardware in mind.
UnrealEngine 3 lasted the whole current generation, and Id tech 5 too pretty much. Frostbite 2 was upgraded just in time for when development of next gen (PS4, Xbone) games started. Same with FoxEngine. The first games on it will be MGS5.
Now that new consoles are soon released we won't see any major upgrades to the popular game engines in a long while.

Engines are regularly enhanced and developed. Fox Engine, Frostbyte2 or Luminous can still get better AND be better used by developer in already impressive ways.
By the time, new graphic cards REALLY make a difference, they'll release new engines for games you won't find on PC anyway (Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Halo, Gran Turismo, Gears of Wars, God of Wars, Forza etc...)
My point here, AGAIN, is that the Graphic Card race is not relevant anymore, the GTX Titan is not that different from the 780 is not that different from the 770 that is not that different from 680 etc...and the result are all up to engine that are ALL available for consoles.
In fact, the futur is really now about Engine and software like the Dream Engine or even more futuristic, the Brigade Engine 2 can testify...
