Forums - Nintendo - Massive Campaign to end Region Locking on Wii U and 3DS Underway

PS4 and Xbox One are now BOTH totally region-free. We can do it!

I'm asking for YOUR support to help end region-locking once and for all. Contact Nintendo by any means possible and DEMAND an end to region-locking NOW!

As you know, every Nintendo home console since the NES and every handheld since the DSi has made use of region-locking. This has kept many region-exclusive titles out of the hands of otherwise prospective customers. If it hadn't been for the original DS being region-free, not many in the West would've been able to play Ouendan and turn it into a a cult hit.

Now, more than ever, is our chance to tell Nintendo that we want the Wii U and 3DS to be made region-free. Please help in any way that you can. Please remember to be polite!

Ask your favorite video game journalists to cover this campaign!

While localizations are wonderful and will always have their place, the value of consumer choice in determining what games to consume cannot be denied.

Thanks for your help.

What reason does the big n have for region locking anyways?

Signed. Seems a silly practice to have anyways.

I will support it. Region locking shouldn't even be a thing now.

Possibly the same reason why Atlus had the region lock on P4 Arena. To prevent people from ordering/buying a game online or off of another region before their own region's release.

Corporations believing it would affect overall sales numbers altogether if it s permitted. Although its kind of dumb....cause in the end overall WW sales is where it matters lol.

I would sign this cause if they take off region lock I could order BD from EU instead of waiting a couple of months in 2014 for the NA release >.>.

But I dont want to input my address since it seems to be required >.>.

You can put a fake one in. Like "AAA Street 999" fake.

@topic: Without region-locking I would never have had to use a Freeloader to play my imported copy of SSBB. Thus the Freeloader being blocked wouldn't have made me look for an alternative and I wouldn't have discovered the Homebrew Channel. Without the HBC I would never have learned of mods for SSBB and stopped playing the game much earlier...

=> I say, let's keep the region-locking

Signed, hope Nintendo sees this and remove the stupid region-lock

Signed. Now time to spread the link!

I will help altough I am not sure how it affects us here in Argentina. But if this could prevent me from importing the console from outside I am glad to sign up for this.

Not really, revenue is what matters and that's the reason for region locking.

It usually takes a while for a Japanese game (but also vice versa) to come to Europe and/or the US. Now they could buy the Jap. version for a budget price before the game is even available in their region, which means that they probably won't support the localized version and that's where the publisher would lose money.

I bet the majority of the mainland European users on VGC have bought one or buy regularly their games from the UK, because they are cheaper than in their own country. Now luckily the UK and the rest of Europe belong to the same region, but in reality publishers are kind of losing some money due to this.
