You are right in the former though and I'll concede the point, my perspective encompasses Nintendo's bussiness direction, which is not the question the OP asked. But to explain my perspective; my opinion is that the success of the Wii with the expanded audience and the subsequent exodus of the core audience damage the brand and decrease the chance of the successor when it got painted in the same brush and failed to also capture the expanded audience.
The pyrrhic victory here should really be Nintendo's and not the Wii.

I don't think there has been an exodus of Nintendo's core audience (and if you are refering to a different core audience, the GameCube already showed that Nintendo didn't have it). The Wii U just so happens to be the most expensive Nintendo console by far and also went through a serious software drought right after launch. And if you believe that the Wii caught on with the expanded audience because it did away with the dual analog stick controller and had Wii Sports (which is absolutely the case), then it's obvious why the Wii U gets ignored (because it's nothing like the Wii).
That doesn't make Nintendo's victory pyrrhic, it just shows that they are morons for doing a 180 with the Wii successor.

are they morons for keeping their promise however? the Wii was initially targeted at both the Hardcore and Casual audience, but the Casuals bought it more due to more "casual-appealing" games like Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii(can be hardcore if played competitively, but the game itself introduced so little that the game looked more casual), and a lot more casual titles.
however, at the Wii U's reveal, they revealed that their plan was that the Wii U is targeted at Hardcore gamers and that they're the main focus, and with the great titles they have coming up like Bayonetta2, SMT X FE, and the fantastic looking X that is the sequel to one of the best, if not the best RPG of the 7th gen, alongside some huge system sellers like Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros, it seems like that they are really pushing hard to get their Hardcore audience back after the Wii's casual flood.
and we already know that after the inevitable sales boost, 3rd parties are gonna start treating the Wii U better, Ubisoft already said that they will make more exclusives and support the Console more than they do now (which is a lot already), EA backtracked after the Xbone's reveal and Reggie confirmed that they already have some titles in development, and we will probably see more 3rd party support as the WiiU fanbase grows over the years, I heard Crytek got CryEngine3 running great on the Wii U and that Crysis3 ran beautifully, so I hope to see more from them if EA's relationship with Nintendo hopefully improves.
it perfectly makes sense to reach out for the Hardcore audience again considering the casuals are into tablets and smartphones now
