Vita is clearly meant to replace your ps3 ( if you have one ) on the future when you'll be tempted by the ps4.
If you're like me and find use of the psp back in the time of the ps2, take a vita right now. You'll be highly satisified. If not, wait for the ps4, keep your ps3 right now and buy a vita as a replacement of your actual gen system when you'll get the ps4.
The vita will probably a killer handheld next year. Ps2 collections and blockbuster coming + a lot of indies game.

Uh, how? How does the Vita replace the PS3?
The rEVOLution is not being televised

It's only got an Identity Crisis
"Uh, how? How does the Vita replace the PS3?"
I explained it on the page before.
Actually the ps3 is quite a wonderful device. It is a ps3 ( of course ), a ps2 ( ps2 best titles are almost all here, it only lacks DQVIII actually ), a psx, a lot of other console "great" titles ( Jet set radio for example ) and an indie support. As a gamer who had the best experiences on Sony, I can't be more satisfied with the ps3 system.
The Vita has the potential to replace all those advantages. In fact it already does for the most of them. It can play ps2 game fine ( ps2 collection ), psx title without any problem and can do everything a psp could.
Now for ps3 games : The vita is only barely two year old, and back in the first year they were already ports who looked amazing and quite identical to their ps3 counterpart. To give you a few example look at UMVC3, most wanted and Fifa ( best ports visual wise in my opinion ). Those game are true HD title.
Look here for example : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNGxy57vX_Q
There is some fluidity optimisation problem, but for a first year port, it looks amazing and very close to its ps3 counterpart no doubt. I do not like Most wanted, but on ps3 it is quite a looker. Same goes for Fifa and UMVC3.
I have fifa on both vita and Ps3, and they're not far from each other at all. Fifa 13 on vita is identical to fifa 11. Wich is quite amazing since EA was clearly lazy to port all the changes from fifa 12 and 13 on vita since everything else look exaclty the same.
It screams loud that the vita could play at least some of the most important ps3 blockbuster in a near future ( Fifa, Tekken, Gran Turismo, NB2K ). I only have doubt about GTAIV and V.
I could also named PSAB, Thieves of time, LBP, or indie production who looks identical to their ps3 counter part but I do not think they are that hard to port on a vita since they're "lesser" HD titles. I have no doubt the vita can play stunning visual game like Journey too.
I am truly conveiced that the vita will be a perfect replacement of a ps3. And since the ps4 won't allow backward compatibility, nor psn titles on ps4, they better think of the vita that way.

What does Vita have ? Fucking great potential mate. And that's something. Let me explain to you my point of view. First, Vita is mostly a psp 2. Psp was amazing, she could emulate a lot of hardware and could do other usefull things. The psp was not good because of games, most of them were/are very forgettable quality wise. They did not even sell properly, looks at the charts. Psp was amazing back in a time because of emulation, media, hack possibilities... I had a psp back in a time and I can ensure you, psp games are not what you are willing to take psp for. And still, she had almost perfect ps2 port, Gta stories, Gran turismo, Tekken DR, Shin budokai, Ghost of sparta that are still good today. Back on Vita. The Vita does everything the psp could. And since the psp is still a usefull device, so is the vita. The vita has everything to become a great handheld and a neat nex gen console. She has the potentiel to be a ps3 on a pocket like they said. And ps3 is already quite amazing and highly enough for an handheld. But what they did not precise is that you can access to psx, psp ( all titles available by hacking or most of them by the SEN ), a ps2 with all the best collection available/coming, and almost a ps3... The only real actual problem is the price and the lacks of decent blockbuster. The price is a problem actually because 200$ + memory card price ( around 50$ for decent capacity) for a handheld is way too much. As good as it is. And it lacks decent blockbuster because so far most of the big game are pretty ass. Most wanted is an average at best racing game and is actually the best racing game you could get on it. The fighting game are below decent ( SFXTfail, Umvc3, playstationsmashbros, blazblue niche... ). The only good sport game is Fifa 13 ( wich is quite amazing in istelf ). I do not know about RPG, I'm not very into it, but we all know only FF kills charts, the rest is quite niche. And they're not FF on Vita. The vita needs games like Gran turismo, Tekken, Final Fantasy ( which is quite dead now though, if it's not FFXV who looks quite amazing ), GTA and other killer charts franchise ( pared with quality obviousely, otherwise that won't work ). They'll come with time. The best psp games came late on psp. I'm sure they'll come with time. Turismo and Tekken ( albeit not that sure, depends on Tekken R download ) are coming. People always say that Vita lacks support. Heck, Sony is trying to make this plateform something. Even the creative dev are trying hard by porting every big psn indies title to the ps vita. She lacks BLOCKBUSTER not overall support. What does she has you ask ? Actually, if it was not for the price, the Vita would already be an amazing device. You could do all of the things you do with a psp, with a wonderful screan. The vita is perfect for indies and well supported by indies dev. Except mark of the ninja and Fez, all the best indies of the last 2 years are on it (HotlineM, Limbo, escape plan, Guacamelee...) or are coming (Flower in mind...). Great ps2 collection available ( Mgs, Jak and Dexter, Zone of the enders... ) and great one coming ( God of war, Raccoon, Devil may cry, probably prince of persia too... ). Wich means to have a ps2 in your pocket along with a psp, psx and a ps3 to lesser extent ( and in a near future ). That's something since most of the big and best titles of the 13 last year were on those plateform. With tactile screen for indies and web... ( And sorry for my bad english, this is not my first language, feel free to correct me. ) |
Consoles don't sell well on potential.
The Vita is not the PSP as you can obviously see.
People are right to say Sony is no longer trying to make something of the platform. They released some first party games in the first year and that didn't really help it much. 3rd parties aren't really supporting the thing with anything more than games you can easily get on other platforms, ports and indie games.
Sony's language has made it pretty clear that a PS4 controller is the most Vita has to look forward to. With PS4 out, the bulk of their development resources is going to go there since their home console is WAY more important to them.
So it's a catch 22 situation. 3rd party not supporting well because of low hardware sales. Lack of good support means hardware sales won't get that much better.

Except being played (in my house anyway). It's been sitting untouched in the hutch on my desk for well over a month now :( Between all the new stuff I've gotten lately for the 3DS/iPad/PS3/Wii U/Xbox 360, there's been no reason to take the Vita out.
Stop hating and start playing.
