Forums - Gaming - What makes certain QTE's enjoyable and what makes them fall flat?

Of the couple games I've played with QTEs, I've actually really enjoyed the implementation in 3 games. Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi, and Okami.

...And yet I don't really like them in other games. Why is it that, despite all the hate QTEs get on the internet, some games just manage to pull it off? (I guess in Okami it really makes sense given the context and the world itself even though they are really tedious if you play them on Wii)

Like Ryse's QTEs look weird, but some games don't have that clunky? feeling and it just feels really natural.

I prefer when there in a sequence rather than repeatedly mashing the same button

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Its because quite often they are used as a replacement for what could have been done in real time gameplay, and often done badly

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

The only good QTE is "Press Start".

WHERE IS MY KORORINPA 3

I've never ever come across an "enjoyable" QTE. QTE's are cheap, disruptive and utter bullshit in games.

If they have context, such as lifting door. Mash A. If you must dodge meteor, press left. Limit Breaks :p. Or dance dance revolution

Generally speaking, QTE's seem to me, implemented because they didn't want the extra  time (or budget) to be put into making fancy engine upgrades, but didn't want to put a cutscene. I understand that devs don't have the budget to do absolutely everything, so neat, sparse nicely planned out QTE's enhance the game imo.

I've never seen a good QTE.

QTEs are never fun. They've only gotten worse with clunky movement control and/or screen swiping.

The worst is when they are embedded into what seem like cut scenes. Sit back to take a drink. Then all of a sudden the game is screaming at you to hit X or some bullshit.

I suppose in general if some (preferably short) QTE is done well, it can be alright. But overall, I personally hate the concept. I'd far rather have a Zelda type boss battle, where you actually FIGHT The boss, figure out it's pattern, beat it with your own ability and ingenuity vs. "do this and press this button in sequence = boss defeated". It's just a very uninspired, and to me, lazy style of game design. For example, I really enjoyed The Force Unleashed, EXCEPT for the QTE based boss battles, which were sometimes murder in that department, and almost killed the overall enjoyment for the game.

QTE's are an abomination. They insult me as a player.
