Forums - Nintendo - Can Pikmin 3 take the series to better sales?

The real question is whether Pikmin 3 can help life the Wii U out of its funk. I know people write it off as being too niche, but I know quite a few gamers who say they'll buy the system when it comes out.

It's only looking to sell about 100k week 1 in Japan according to COMG pre-orders

I see no reason to expect this game to sell better then Pikmin 1 or 2. It could do fairly well in North America, so because of strong sales outside of Japan, I could see the game breaking 2 million, but it's always going to be one of Nintendo's good, yet niche franchises. No different from Metroid or Fire Emblem.

Still, it could push hardware sales quite a bit. Had I not had Wii games to beat, Pikmin 3 would look like the first real reason to buy a WiiU.

100K seems like a pretty good start considering the low Wii U sales. Pikmin (1) debuted with similar #'s and sold over 500K in the end. Pikmin normally has decent longevity in Japan.

Another reason why I see potential in Pikmin is that unlike Metroid or Fire Emblem, Pikmin has that classic Nintendo charm. Metroid & FE get high reviews and are considered to be great high quality games but lack Nintendo style. (Seems to be why people like them) Pikmin has Nintendo written all over it.

Actually, I'm afraid of the contrary.

I don't see how that could possibly happen but it could. That would be sad...

2 million? Are you ok?

Was this directed at me? I never said it would sell 2 Million but yeah I think it will.

I am fine. Why?

It's not that much more than Pikmin 1 did on Gamecube.

It depend on how much Nintendo market it, keep the media upto speed with the game. Look at the The Last of Us.

Don’t follow the hype, follow the games

They won't. Nintendo are awful at marketing any of their games besides Mario and Donkey Kong. Hell, they're awful at marketing just about anything these days.

They should do marketing pushes for games like Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, and X, but I'm sure they won't.

It's not that much more than Pikmin 1 did on Gamecube.

Why would Pikmin 3 outsell Pikmin 1? Is the franchise any bigger now than it used to be? It skipped a generation and the Wii U isn't really in a healthy spot. Besides there are many games to steal Pikmin 3's parade this Holiday.

Wii U could very well go on to sell more lifetime than the Gamecube, giving the game a bigger audience to sell to in the long run.

At any rate, I don't think it'll do 2m, I predicted 1.2m.

I think Wii U will probably sell better than Gamecube, and Pikmin 3 looks really well done with some neat features such as multiplayer, excellent graphics and it's launching at a time will little other competition. So I'll say sure, it could be the biggest selling Pikmin, but it will always be a strategy game with a funny name and theme, so it will always be niche.
