I personally didn't feel the gameplay was particularly great either. Its kinda like Splinter Cell mixed with Resident Evil. With instant deaths!

Its the story that really pulled me in.

For me the gun combat wasn't anything new but the melee and weapon combat was amazing and probably the best I have ever seen.

It is not Call of Duty, I cannot explain to you why I think the gun and combat overall is perfect: it supposed to be like this.

A good war game would never have controls like Call of Duty or health regeneration, war is freaking hell, it supposed to be tense.

I played at a retail store near by and seemed rather boring to me. You walk, walk, kill somebody, the walk..., etc. I mean the visual side of things is stunning and the story I am sure is great, but can somebody tell me what's so good about the gameplay. Please do not attack me Naughty Dog/The Last of Us fanboys :).

No offense, but your games list answer it for me: you WANT TO hate The Last of Us, because you are a Xbox man. Normal procedure here, you ARE GOING to hate it. There is nothing we can do about it.

But I tell you this, if you are a horror fan and you like a well made game and history, it is very sad to dimiss such a masterpiece. But you are going to dismiss, I am sure of it.

Also, this is not a quickmatch game, you supposed to lock the door, dim the lights and take your time from the beginning.

Pretty much any videogame can be summarised into the sum of its parts to make it seem less than it is. I won't start listing examples because it'll probably lead to derailing the thread but just think about some games you've played and think "What did I actually do in these games and how often did I repeat it?". Did that make them into lesser games?

I haven't actually played TLOU yet, so I won't offer my personal opinion on it. Suffice to say, though, that plenty of people - both reviewers and the general public - seem satisfied with what it there.

The gameplay looks very simple and dumbed down to me. I don't see any difference to Uncharted which to me played like an interactive movie (to me most modern HD games are essentially interactive movies). The only difference seems to be the pacing, if Uncharted was designed to be 30-70 stealth versus gunfight, in The Last of Us that ratio is a bit more adjustable according to your style.

I sneak up to an enemy and then I'm given a visible prompt to hit triangle or square to trigger a fancy takedown animation. Where's the fun in that?

Also what I hate is that the characters are giving clues all the time by talking, so where's the challenge in traversing the environment and figuring out puzzles?

People including journalists seem to be totally engulfed by hype, I feel like an honest opinion and review is hard to find about this game.

So in other words, you havent played the game and have absolutely no idea what you're talking about?

1) Hollywood worthy acting/Narrative
2) Best console graphics to date
3) Engaging story
4) Great gameplay

Just to name a few obvious reasons

All gameplay related:

"+ Environments are bigger than Uncharted's (3-4x the size, multiple paths in many areas), exploration is encouraged (for loot mainly, though you may find a key that'll be used for a safe somewhere around the map for example).

+ You can stealthily take out enemies or go all guns, but you'll be punished for the latter (low ammo). Sometimes you can just sneak by. "Choice-based" combat is the term I've heard used for it, and is fitting. Stealth works better than in Uncharted, and you don't get multiple hordes of enemies like you sometimes do in Uncharted.

+ Survival/rpg elements like looting and crafting are well done and paired well with the bigger environments

+ Enemies are smart. They'll flank you, they know when you're using guns or not and act accordingly, that kind of stuff. Maybe not as smart as initially thought, but still better than most games."

Possibly.

If not a single person who has played the game confirms what I'm afraid of then I admit I'm wrong, but until that I remain sceptical.

Modern games so often have these problems I've described.

Currently playing: Call of Duty, FIFA, Assassin's Creed. All on Xbox 360.

"Please do not attack me Naughty Dog/The Last of Us fanboys :)"

Yeah, I'm not touching this one.

if a game can make me cry...

It's a good game, but I agree with the fact that it's a bit over-rated and over-hyped. Some people think it's the second coming are something. lol
