Context. It's important. That always sounded like a joke to me and obviously they wouldn't say "We're going first, get ready Microsoft we're having an event in the next few months". That wasn't a lie, it wasn't even PR being defensive. It was a joke.

It's like you didn't even read the article. PS4 will come down in price, MUCH faster than the PS3 did. Why? It's not using alien technology. PS3 costs are hard to bring down because of that Cell processor. |
Bringing down the PS4 cost is mostly about die shrinking the new chip. It doesn't matter whether it's "alien" tech or not, it's about whether the 22nm, 14nm and so on nodes are available, and affordable to port to.
Sony's lack of 32nm die shrink for the Cell indicates that new node prices are expensive still. Combined with my knowledge of future die shrinks, I'm confident the PS4 will drop in price much slower than the PS3.

That's a really good advantage because the die shring will be natural... AMD always will move to better and cheaper process... they already have plan for 22nm APUs. |
Can you show me a recent roadmap showing a 20/22nm APU? I don't think they do have such plans in public.

Well Intel already have almost all processors in 22nm so I think next year is the time to AMD move too.

They don't have the technology available. It's not happening next year.
Obviously they wouldn't want to undercut their new launching console as it is anyways.
That said, they're waiting (as is Microsoft) for Nintendo to cut the price of the Wii U, THAT'S when you'll see the price of PS3 and 360 dropped to counteract that. The 360 and PS3 is debatably a bigger concern for Nintendo moving forward anyways.

Die shrinks are really only usefull for a redesign of the entire console so think about 3 years from launch. PS4 will get at least 2 price cuts by then as the prices of the components naturally go down in price.
