Forums - Nintendo - Is Donkey Kong a system seller?

Something I just recently noticed is that Donkey Kong has always released 3-4 years after a console and the install base was already rather large. This is the first time that a Donkey Kong game has come out within a year of launch, it makes me wonder is it a system seller or just a game you buy if you already own the console?

Donkey Kong has not been a console seller since his SNES days IMO but thats only because he had not had a proper game since the N64 only spin offs, i mean come on the Wii version of DK Returns sold more then some other games that people would consider unit movers. So i can see him moving quite a few Wii Us once he hits stores

Very smart of Nintendo do push a new Donkey Kong game from Retro Studios then a new Metriod from a business standpoint.

Honestly its the game that has tiped the scales for me. I want Bayonetta 2 and something else(can't think of it) but im not buying a console just for a game or 2, now with DKC Im more willing to look into buying a Wii U.

Donkey Kong has surely recovered in popularity since Donkey Kong Country Returns. The critical acclaim of that game (and the sales, duh) can prove that point.

So, yes. I think that if Donkey Kong is marketed correctly (AKA, not like how the Wii U is/was) it can be a system seller.

if they made a succsessor or sequal to dk64 id buy a wii u, but not for dk country

yes, it is. Less than Mario/Zelda but more than Metroid

As a recall DK lastest entry sold more then every Zelda game but 3 and more then any recent entry so id put him right there in the same tier with LOZ,maybe even alittle above from a sales standpoint (its crazy i know! but the big guy has some selling power). Hes like a 2D Mario game where its very accessible to anyone where about LOZ is not.

A smaller scale one than Mario or Pokemon, but yes. Basically, it's about on par with Uncharted.

I agree, I would love to see a new Metroid/Star Fox/F-Zero sooner rather than later but Iit makes sense to release games that are guaranteed 5m+ sellers like Donkey Kong/Mario Kart/Smash Bros and 3D Mario that plays like NSMB, and throw in some smaller core orietned games like Bayonetta/Pikmin/W101/X.

Wow, someone who actually looks at that decision from a business stand point? I'm shocked and appalled. But pleased. Very pleased that someone else can see through all the crap to notice that maybe (just maybe!) Nintendo might want to sell the Wii U.
