Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft: Xbone Is 3x As Powerful Than X360 (Phil Spencer Twitter: It Was A Mistake)

1) Yeah, it seems MS can't make up their minds

2) LOL, well if you look at it that way, Wii sold most in 7th gen, so jump from 7th to 8th is completely insane ;)

4) I think the point of responses was more for you to realize how clock speed is completely irrelevant without knowing other parameters...if it makes any difference, I have no problem saying PS3 was pretty bad product, 360 was great (except for RRoD) and PS4 seems to be pretty good.

As for that original comparison, I'd say it's more or less accurate - PS4 is more than 1.15x XOne though, depending on how much those MOVE engines are making XOne's GPU to perform closer to full blown 7790 (which unfortunately it is not), I'd say it's between 1.4x-1.6x...though, PS4's GPU has some great enhancements, so it may be even more. Also, WiiU is still enigma (160 or 320 shaders), it can be lower than what you put, but also slightly higher.

1) Well Pemalite showed us it's about 10, and Microsoft have stated is't about 10x as well. Assuming PS4 is just as much more powerful over One as PS3 was to 360, then there is no reason to believe that PS4 will be any more then 10x as powerful as PS3.

I also still don't understand how the difference from XB1 to PS3 is only 10x, if you look at the RAW power the PS3 is closer to 14x the XB1's power. Still, PS2 was the primary system last gen, and it was half as powerful as the XB1. So effectively the jump from last gen to this was 20x (28x if I'm right about the gap between XB1 and PS3), there the jump this time is only 10x. Plus the last gen jump was over 4/5 years, where this gen is over 7/8, big difference, the jump this gen is not that much compared to before.

2) PS3 could outsell the Wii in the long run, and most game were made for the HD twins, not the Wii. I would argue that the PS360 was the standard this gen where PS2 was the standard last gen.

In all fairness we could average the power for the gen based off the number of consoles sold, but it wouldn't make a huge difference. The jump last gen was a lot bigger then the jump this gen.

4) I think it's more that people didn't read my comment, and went on a defensive immediatly. It's just the way a lot of people are on forums.

Anyway, PS3 was a bad console? How?

As for that original comparision, I've been told that I underballed the WiiU. Again, I can't used GFLOPs for a fair comparision, but WiiU has between 350-500GFLOPS, so it's anything from 2-3x as powerful as the PS3, but a 5th to a 3rd as weak as the PS4. WiiU is still closer to PS3/360 then PS4/One, but the gap between graphics is smaller then it was for Wii-PS360.

---

Anyway, in the end WiiU, PS4, One all play games in 1080p, 60FPS, so we're finally entering the true HD era. I'm going to enjoy games on all fronts, and not argue pointless arguements with people who just don't matter.

No, wii u doesn't have between 350-500 GFLOPS. that number is purely speculative and based on almost nothing. and as you said, wii u is running games more graphically intensive than ps360 AND at 1080p 60 fps so it's hard to imagine it's gpu is only 350-500 GFLOPS. If i were to guess  I'd say the number of GFLOPS is between 600-750.

@bold Too expensive and too over-engineered for its own good - it cost them a LOT of money, and a LOT of PS2 user base due to price.

As for WiiU - its GPU is VLIW5 architecture, very similar to 360 (most likely even with the same number of TMUs and ROPs, though I think TMU number is 32 vs 16 in 360), and if it has 320 shaders (which is most likely), than it might be some 70-80% faster than PS360 - if not, and it's 160 shader part (which I doubt), it might be some 20-30% faster.

Contrary to what some people here living in Phantasy Kindom believe, you can't cram some mysterious super-tech on 40nm fab into such a small chip with pretty low TDP and expect it to have some incredible performance. So, unfortunately, (unfortunately cause few years ago I was really hoping for 4850-4870 level performance from WiiU), PS4's GPU  is more in the area of 7-8x of WiiU's...and please don't make same mistake as before and compare their FLOPS numbers, they are completely useless ;)

If you're really interested, search for 4650/5550 GDDR3 benchmarks and compare them to 7850/7870 to get the picture what I'm talking about.

LOL the Wii U is like 1.25 times as strong as the 360, and the PS4 is about 12-16 times stronger based on simple math (Not because 16x the ram, that is a coincidence)!

The X1 from my estimates is probably 6-8 times stronger but IDK for sure because MS keeps hiding it...

you're absurdly wrong regarding wii u and ps4.

I adressed the PS4 with a response to someone else, and LOL you Wii U people just won't get your heads out of the sand will you?  The Wii U has NO GAME that looks better than Killzone 2 or even BF3.  At best it will look slightly better but it will b e hardly noticable.

Your views are quite misguided.

Not to mention it doesn't matter how strong the GPU is since the system only has 1GB of ram and no standard storage to install textures on.  Essentially it is already bottlenecked by these two things to the point that it will be impossible to surpass the current visuals in any meaningful way...

It *only* has 2x the usable RAM (which may well be expanded in the future).

Plus a huge chunk of the silicon remains utterly unmapped.

Ignoring the developers who have said it is sizably stronger.

Maybe, I mean every Wii U exclusive is in 1080p, so there is some sort of a jump.

LOL, thats what I said, but he just lives in his own world.

Pretty much everyone agrees WiiU games look better then PS360, and PS4 is about 10x as powerful as the PS3 (based off math), but....ahh

Head Bashing doesn't suffice.

Better than Gears of War: Judgemnt, God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us and Halo 4?

Easily. (Maybe not with current ports, but in the future, easily.)

Those games aren't even that amazing from a graphics perspective.

For starters the Wii U has a Tessellator, go back a few pages and see the comparison I drew up between the PS3 and PS4 on what kind of difference it will make.
Granted the Wii U's Tessellator unit isn't that powerful, but it should achieve the same effect just several factors lower.

Give it time for Developers to work out what works and what doesn't work on the Wii U, it's still early for the console remember, games don't push any system untill late in it's life.

Edit: Also with Epic not giving the Wii U support with the Unreal 4 engine, I really hope developers pick up the Unigen or Cry Engine instead. :)

they also ignore the games that already look amazing (X, mario kart, bayonetta, smash bros) and the devs that did nothing but praise the wii u's RAM. they made it clear they're very sactisfied with the RAM + Edram combination.

The console has the potential to beat those games (I will add God of War III to that list, and even Halo 4, Uncharted 2 and 3). But so far, no games were released on the Wii U that beat those.

X looks promising though.
