Forums - Microsoft - Top reason why some Sony fans should quit Playstation and only buy Xbone

i'm trying to remember the discussion from back then but i don't really remember anyone saying they think used games are a bad as piracy. i just remember some pro-piracy guys trying to link used games and piracy to justify their piracy habits as "not any worse".

I just said that a few posts above, in both cases money doesnt go to devs, why are they any different?

Which Sony fans?

The Sony fans who say buying used games is as bad as piracy. The Sony fans who have drunk the kool aid from certain publishers who say development studios are going out of business because of evil used game trading.

You guys should be supporting Xbone with your money. You should be standing on your principles and saying NO! to Sony and Nintendo. I will not support a console that continues to put software developers' jobs at risk, and undermines the viability of the video game industry. You should be saying I will support Microsoft's heroic efforts to save us all from a bleak future where there are no more video games, aside from the crap casual rubbish on phones and tablets.

WHAT? that doesnt make any sense, i think used games are as bad as piracy, sure, they wont kill the industry but im sure some devs would use that extra money they could get if everyone bought their game new.

Anyways, theres no point in buying and xbox one for that, you can always buy the game new (AND SUPPORT THE DEVELOPERS) for ps4, wii u or pc

By buying PS4 and not buying Xbone you are indirectly supporting the continuation of used games. You are only partly supporting developers. Proper support of developers is buying a system which ensures every game that is sold earns money for the publisher. That way you are supporting publishers directly with your money, and you are also making sure others do the same.

Put it this way: If the roles were reversed, and Sony had the DRM and Microsoft kept used game trading free and open I would be buying my first ever Microsoft console.  Am I relieved that Sony are doing the thing that aligns with my principles? Yes I am. But would I regret switching to MS if it was the other way around? Not one bit.

I am saying to you specifically, that you should be buying a Xbone. You should reject Sony's (and Nintendo's) continued disdain for the economic health of the software business, now that you actually have a choice in consoles between open used game sales, and controlled used game sales which (according to you) better supports developers and publishers. You did have a choice before: PC, but now you have a console choice as well. Controller differences be damned, exclusive differences be damned. Do what's best for the health of the video game software industry, and in your world view that's supporting platforms which actively work against the used game market.

People should make decisions based on principle, the stronger the support of that principle the more firm and obvious the decision should be.

But what should people with contradictory principles do?

Like all those Xbox enthusiasts who after the Xbone reveal were preaching the same, that used games etc. are the devil because the developers, publishers etc. are pretty much starving because they do not earn enough money because of used games - and who are now saying that the "your family" loophole of sharing games with up to 10 friends is the best feature ever and will save them shitloads of money?

Nintendo gamers don't believe used games are ruining the industry and neither does Nintendo.

The best way for console makers to deal with the used games market is to ensure their games are so good that people don't want to trade them in, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Polygon. But supporting used games is also important, he added.

"We have been very clear, we understand that used games are a way for some consumers to monetize their games," Fils-Aime said. "They will buy a game, play it, bring it back to their retailer to get credit for their next purchase. Certainly, that impacts games that are annualized and candidly also impacts games that are maybe undifferentiated much more than [it] impacts Nintendo content. Why is that? Because the replayability of our content is super strong. The consumer wants to keep playing Mario Kart. The consumer want to keep playing New Super Mario Bros. They want to keep playing Pikmin. So we see that the trade-in frequency on Nintendo content is much less than the industry average – much, much less. So for us, we have been able to step back and say that we are not taking any technological means to impact trade-in and we are confident that if we build great content, then the consumer will not want to trade in our games."

He's absolutely right. If they want us to hold on to our games, make better ones.

You completely misunderstand this thread. I'm telling people they should act on principle. If their principles are that used game trading is bad then they should be supporting Microsoft and Xbone. I'm totally serious. Sony fans who think the used game market is bad should be buying Xbone.

In the interests of full disclosure I've stated my principles.

People should make decisions based on principle, the stronger the support of that principle the more firm and obvious the decision should be. I am strongly in favour of an open used games market, even though I mostly buy games new. Thus on principle I oppose what MS is doing. I don't oppose MS because they are MS, or because they are not Sony or because they competing with Sony. People who are strongly in favour of shutting down used game trading should be buying the console that most closely aligns with their principles. I happen to think their principles are based on false premises, but if they are their principles then they should be guided by them and meaningfully back up companies that are aligned with their principles.

Sony and Nintendo fans should seriously consider their views on this matter, and if they find their views in alignment with Microsoft then they should be buying Xbone.

How is my advocating that some Sony and Nintendo fans should by Xbone poisonous anti MS hate? I really do mean it. They should be buying Xbone. If they are only buying PS4 because of Killzone, or Knack,. or exclusive Batman costumes then they are woefully misguided.

You get that I am basically criticisng a segment of the Sony and Nintendo fan base right?

i thought your op was sarcastic. Man, i need to stop visiting vgchartz for a few days

well I was using a bit of sarcasm, but not directed as MS or their DRM. It was directed at some Sony and Nintendo gamers. The point I'm makling however I am being serious about.

I think this obsessional Microsoft hate is really poisoning this website :(.

Perhaps it would be best that this thread and other similar ones are just closed.

No offense,  but do you mean just honest opinions of a company that doing some legitimately crappy things right now? I understand that the M$ hate is getting thicker by the day, but in many ways, it's completely justified. People are just to do their part in exposing a product that is almost 100% anti-consumer at this point.

Did anybody else read the article about a message from Xbox Support that says if you get baned from XBL on XBone, you give up all liscences for those games and thus LOSE them? I keep telling myself that even M$ can't be that bad, but then I wonder.

they are very different...

piracy is taking someone else's work without consent, compensation, or even knowledge.

in used games the devs/publishers already got their money.  and agreement was made  between the seller (publisher/dev) and the buyer (me) to transfer ownership from one party to the next.  once transferred the original seller's rights end and the buyers begins.  honda can't tell me when/if/how i resell my car.   Shanile (the previous owner) cannot tell me when/if/how i resell my home.  MS/Sony/EA/Activision/whomever should have no say in when/if/how i resell my games.

if you believe in property rights like i do pricinples are pretty simple:  piracy bad.  reselling good.

Again, WHAT? I dont need to support the xbox one to support developers, its not like sony and nintendo block new games. Whats best for the game industry? (they way i see it) just buy the game new, doesnt matter if its for 20 bucks or less just contribute to the devs for the good/bad/mediocre work they did. You think a game might not be good and dont wanna risk your hard earned money on it? wait a few months to go down in price, wait for digital discounts.
