As you get closer to the cars the LOD increases so by the time you're near them they are at max LOD and look great, but the further away you get the lower the LOD, because you don't needlessly render unseeable detail. If PD don't have varying LOD then they are seriously wasting processing power.

Yeap... my point is GT5 didn't swap LOD models in races or anything else... is the same mod for all modes (inclusing the Photo Model). Forza swap LOD models for everything even when you have 1 or more cars in the race... with 1 car in the race it uses the same Photo Mode LOD with 4xAA and with 16 cars it use a way low LOD model... the Autovista LOD have close to 1 million polygon.
Edit - GT5 change the effects and AA used over the cars models for different Game Modes like the Photo Mode is way more polished than the Race one but the model and numbers polygon is the same.
