Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo hardly showed anything new AT ALL; have they run out of ideas? (Rant)

DanneSandin said:

I agree that DKCR needs a sequel, but is it what it needs NOW? Is it what Retro NEEDS to work with? I don't think so. But DKCFT is only a sum of all the parts. I'm not singling out that game; I'm talking about ALL the games Nintendo showed today. Very little innovation/new ideas was shown.

I am not saying that 3DLand ISN'T a new idea/take on Mario; on the contrary - I've said in this very thread that it was a new, fresh idea, but it's not what the Wii U needs. It's not the path 3D Mario should take. 3D Mario has NEVER copied another Mario game for it's core mechanics. 3D World looks too much like 3DLAnd. I hope you're right in that this will be a new spin off of Mario and that we'll see a "proper" 3D Mario next year or something like that...

I actually never played many Rare games. What brought me back was the Wii with Zelda TP and Mario Galaxy; the innovation that Nintendo had going the whole last gen.

You're just being overly eager and crapping on everything Nintendo offers until then. They will come....

“Take The Legend of Zelda franchise, for example, the fans must be looking for the graphic representations that they do not see as cheap at all when the title is released for the Wii U. When it is necessary, we do not hesitate to role out our resources.”

Zelda is on its way, a proper successor to Mario Galaxy is clearly on its way I can't believe you can think otherwise. Did you know that Galaxy had a 60-man orchestra?? Just for the music. They don't take Mario lightly on their home consoles.

3DWorld doesn't need to be a whole new idea, it just needs to be a sequel, just like DKC2 was to DKC1, or like Fusion was to Super Metroid. This isn't 3D Mario like you're reading it, it's a handheld 3D Mario game, it doesn't fit in your definition of a 3D Mario game not copying a prior entry. Also if you look very closely Galaxy borrows a lot from Sunshine. I'll try not to deviate too much but to say even mainline Mario doesn't borrow is not completely fair either. There is only so many entries in 3D Mario after which you can innovate. You only do spheroidal gravity once and then it's no longer an innovation.

DKCR 2 is exactly what is needed now, and in due time a proper 3D Mario and 3D Zelda game will arrive much like it mostly has mid-way through the Nintendo home console's life-cycle. Just be patient if Smash, X, MK and other great gaming content is not enought until then.

Whether you are satisfied with the games Nintendo showed or not, the fact remains:

Several were delayed.
They line up for the next 9-12 months looks THIN (as in few games), and this is already after a 6 month drought.
Nintendo needs momentum, they need to SELL MORE CONSOLES. Who thinks Wii U will get any attention at Christmas 2013 with $349 price point, a Gamecube remake and a 3DS platformer sequel?

I am not attacking Nintendo because I want them to fail, I am attacking them because I want them to succeed. And right now they are not doing what is necessary to make Wii U a success as a platform. The "core gamers" will flock to PS4, the "casuals" will not spend $349 for a console to play games that do not show real innovation or major improvement from Wii.

So we are getting a few new games that seem less than Nintendo's full effort, we already had a long Wii U drought, and us Wii owners had an almost 2 year drought before that!

How does Nintendo expect to even keep the loyal base they still have left? And why do they not want to sell games to the huge Wii base anymore?

It's like they were so afraid of the "casual" competition from social games and mobiles and tablets that they just abandoned it completely.

I predict the Wii U will be the least successful Nintendo home console ever, by far.

You're absolutely right NinPie, but this thread about Nintendo. I'm expecting MORE from them. That's why Zelda or Mario never goes stale! They always have NEW ideas; they might rehash the names of their characters, but it's always new games.

You have no idea what you're talking about if you're being serious about bold.

Nintendo will make a 3D Mario, it's not like between Galaxy 1 and 2 they didn't make NSMB either.........

Why? I hold Nintendo higher than any other developer, because they always brings the good stuff.

But what if this is THE 3D Mario od this gen?! Remember, they're busy with making a new engine, developing the game and developing it for HD. I don't think they have the time to make another game between Galaxy2 and the next home console Mario... This might be it.

The reason I will level this criticism at nintendo and not at Sony or MS is because I expect better from nintendo, when you watch a Sony or MS conference you expect shooters, shooters, shooters because that is mostly all that they have, hell their fans seem to think a NEW IP is a game in different clothes.

On the other hand nintendo has alot of different franchises with different gameplay ideas, MK was different from F-zero (well not so anymore), Star Fox is different from DK, Metriod is different from Zelda why are we not seeing these other franchises.
WHY THE HELL NOT, AS I'M TYPING THIS I JUST SEEM TO BE GETTING ANGRIER AT THEM.

You're getting my drift! This is what I'm talking about!

Dear god...

No, just no. It makes absolutely no sense at all. They have a lot of resources dedicated to the upcoming successor to galaxy, not enough to fit in what we saw with 3DW, much much more......

You don't hold Nintendo up to higher standards, you hold them up to standards which make absolutely no sense with their pedigree and that's my gripe here. Your expectations make no sense with Nintendo's supply of Mario, Metroid and Zelda for most of its history. The games will come out, just not yet. It's a new HD era for Nintendo, it may take a bit more time than for Wii, but not so much more than for the cube (WW, SS all came out later).

Coming up with a plan and content for Nintendo E3's has to be the easiest job in the world.

Predicting Nintendo s message at E3's has to be the 2nd easiest job in the world.

Predicting when Nintendo games will be released for play has to be the most difficult job in the world.

I have not even followed gaming for more than a year or 2 but how hard is it to predict that Nintendo is working on a Zelda game, a Mario game, a Donkey Kong game, maybe a Metroid game and so on.......
they are probably always working on games containing their big name characters/themes so it is not a stretch for them to announce as much- of course actually giving release dates or even committing to a specific console generation is a different story. Nintendo could come out tomorrow and announce they are working on every game that it s followers would like see and it would probably be true- but it does not do much good for people who bought a Wii U last year (or are considering buying a wii u now) if you don t know when or if these games will be released.

Nintendo was touting games last November and December that were due out w in 1-4 months, some which already had release dates and some of those games are STILL not released. So for Ninty to announce a game that is due "sometime in 2014" is like not announcing it at all IMO- it means nothing- I loved Xenoblade and think the trailers for X look great- but it is due in 2014 - the Wii U could be gone by then as far as we know- and 2014 could just as easily be 2015 or who knows when - same w all the 2014 games that have been announced- they announced a Wii U Zelda game a year+/- back but did not even mention it today-

Nintendo has not exactly earned trust behind their words IMO so could have announced 100 games today but if they don t have release dates in 2013 then it does not mean much

This! You're totally getting where I'm coming from!

Let me ask you something. Does 2 games really make you hate Nintendo all of a sudden? With 1 disappointment comes an amazing game (3D Mario and X). One of this "disappointments" looks amazing (I'm talking about DKC Freeze here), yep Retro could have made something else, but does that make DKC a bad game? A game you aren't going to enjoy?

I don't hate Nintendo, but I am disappointed. And 3DWorld isn't amazing - it's basically Mario 3D Land U. I'm VERY sure it's a great game, but it's not what 3D Mario is about. 3D Mario is about re-inventing Mario (Mario 64 - Mario SUnshine - Mario Galaxy). I'm not saying these games are bad; I'm positive they'll rock! But it's the lack of new ideas that bugs me.

No "megatons" were shown, but as a Nintendo fan you should already know that Nintendo NEVER comes out with "megatons" (Bayonetta 2 being the only exception in recent memory).

Sonic Lost World is a megaton imo. And he got like 2 seconds of gameplay...

No new IPs were shown, did you really expect a new one coming from Nintendo, outside of the indie side? The "Miyamoto's new IP"? which btw is most likely going to be an eshop game.

Yes, I was expecting a new IP. They always brings a new IP every gen. Just look at the Wii-series.

No third party support? that has been the case since the N64 days. Not even the Wii level of success was able to make the system have decent multiplat games.

Yes and that sucks, all the more reason for Nintendo to innovate/re-invent.

I think your "hype meter" was waaaaay too high before the conference. I was hyped myself, but I understand how Nintendo works and what to expect from them. Yes, there were thing about the conference that I didn't liked, but it no different than other conferences.

yup.

Or you are saying that Smash, MK8, X, Bayonetta 2, DKC (but not looking at it as "Retro's game", but the gameplay itself) and WW HD did absolutely nothing for you?

They are ALL great games - I'm sure. I'll love playing them. What is missing are the new IDEAS - the re-invention.

As a Nintendo fan you should already expect how Nintendo works and what they do. Like Rol said, Wii U is the next GC, and that's how it's going to be. Be happy with what Nintendo is offering (as long as it doesn't look mediocre), don't expect to be happy with everything, doesn't matter if you are a Nintendo, Sony or MS fan.

My expectations are in line with how Nintendo works. They always brings new ideas to their franchises. Did not see that.

I don't think you can determine which path 3D Mario should take until after we see sales figures for 3D World. If it passes Galaxy 2 like 3D Land did, then this is a step forward.

But over the last 2 E3s nintendo bought  Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, Zombie U, New Super MArio Bros U and Nintendo Land. This is literally a summation of E3 2011+2012 combined. Its really not an achievement to beat that.

the gave us a lot though even though I don't like their decision with mario and retro

I think part of the  fuss is:

1. People expected something big from retro, designed to show of the Wii U. As it stands the new DK would probably be better suited as a 3DS title.
2. Mario, the game that is supposed to hold crown of best game ever rated and compel people to buy the system looks very pedestrian compared to its ambitious predeccessors
3. The fact that this wasn't a live press conference sucked a ton of the energy from it, no fan fare for the mega man announcement etc.

I don't think it was terrible, I just think it was safe and unremakable. For a team with virtually no 3rd party support, its required they work harder to fill that vacancy. On a positive note the glimpses of watch dogs looks brilliant, assuming it was running off Wii U hardware.

It doesn't need to be a 3DS title it just needed to come later, like 2015 later.  We need a definitive Metroid or Star Fox game to really show the console.

I agree, we needed a full fledge Mario game that made us say wow, didnt hapen

I thought it was really good, but not great due to the above points

I can already play this game - on 3DS! That's the problem. I really do hope thet 3dLand/World becomes a new spin off - but it's not a "proper" 3D Mario like Galaxy or 64.
