As I mentioned in the OP, pretty much.

| J_Allard said: Exactly what DRM do publishers control on Xbone that they cannot control on PS4? I am taking this news to mean that the only real DRM the Xbone will have is the daily check in. I can't see 3rd party companies loading up Xbone games with DRM and not PS4. And I can't see every publisher using DRM. |
Games on the XboxOne will not play if you havent logged in within 24 hours... if that isnt enough without any 3rd Party DRM... then i dont know what to say.
On the Xbox MS has (apparently but its unclear how it would actually work), a way of controlling the game and its serial, it cannot be played via CD. You must use MS's system to transfer serials/games.
This is *Not* the same as PS4, and shows how MS have led the way to implement console based DRM, which I guess some publishers have agreed on. Without these things built into the actual console, its very difficult to implement (and costly) individually.

Woah woah woah, slow down. You judge all that from the immediate aftermath of a conference? I concede the fact that this is no different to the PS3 in principle, but still, your judgement seems somewhat premature. Although it certainly seems like that right now, a lot can change. |
Besides the controller there's no reason to buy the x1 over the PS4 and please don't say exclusives since both consoles have strong first party titles.

The 24 hour check in is not DRM publishers control. I am talking about used games working or not working, online activations required or not required, loaning out games supported or not supported.. these are things publishers control on both systems. If they support them on one, they will support them on both. If they don't enforce them on one, why would they choose to enforce it on the other? The DRM they can control on Xbone, they control on PS4. The real DRM that we need to worry about. We'll know soon enough just how DRM hungry publishers actually are.
"The Online Pass program for PlayStation first-party games will not continue on PlayStation 4. Similar to PS3, we will not dictate the online used game strategy (the ability to play used games online) of its publishing partners. As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever."

and there you have it. Should probably update the title.

Why? It is up to publishers still, no?
Sony aren't doing it out of choice.
So exactly like the Ps3. Total non story, and having seen the thing on the internet, totally over reaction from gamers (as usual)

DRM can mean a lot of things, and by just saying "DRM" people start to freak out and picture scenarios that are very unlikely to happen.
However to say "Sony: Online DRM up to publishers" alleviates those wild assumptions people tend to get when they over react.
As you can see from this very thread people are like sheep and start to freak out at the very slightest thing when it comes to breaking their harmony.
