Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft can still trump Sony by...

-> Dropping the 24 hours check.

-> Not making the users pay for Gold to play online.

The used games would still be a turn-off to a lot of people, but they could overcome it (Microsoft, I mean) eventually.

I'm asking too much, but hey.

I don't think the 24 hour check is a problem.

If you're already connected to the Internet, it isn't going to be an issue.  The console will be updating the program Guide if you use it, and it'll be looking for updates to both the system and games.  So if all of that takes place at the same time, awesome.

Two two issues I see are for people who don't have Internet connections on their console, and for the every hour situation if you're on someone else's console.

I think they can solve that issue simply by requiring the disc to be in the drive.

With PSN+ on the PS4 now required for online multiplayer gaming, there is no reason for Microsoft to drop the fee.  What they need to do is make Xbox Live Gold subs a per console subscription, not a per user one.  They're essentially doing this, but they're tying it to one account.  I think I understand the logic behind that, and that is essentially to ensure that your Gold sub is portable to a console that might not have someone with an Xbox Live Gold sub.

Not to mention, infrastructure is expensive, you have to pay for it.

Microsoft's trade-in policy isn't really any different than Sony's, except for the fact that Microsoft has clearly said that it is up to individual publishers as to what they'll do.  I don't think publishers will deviate from the current norm.  I'll be interested to hear more of what Sony and Microsoft will do for non-retail game purchases and DLC.  Both have said you'll be able to trade-in "retail" disc-based games, but neither have said how downloaded games will be handled.

What Microsoft needs to do is provide a better solution for when gaming on a secondary console, when you're completely offline, and to provide a solution for renting and lending, both of which could be easily solved and would one-up Sony.

Wouldn't you think MS is demanding alot more?  What was so wrong with how the 360 was that they had to make all these changes?

My guess is shareholders.

if they remove DRM they got a shot at second place.

Personally price is the biggest factor for them, if it was on par they could let marketing get around the other stuff.

Keep Gold. PS Plus is mandatory so just keep the free games coming.

Take away 24 hour check in, and remove restrictions on used games and sharing. Boom.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

-Lower the price to at least $349.
-Change used game policy and online once a day

Unfortunately they won't do either I think.

They can't do any quick fixes. They would have to cut the price to match the PS4 and abandon any DRM/ second hand restrictions. I don't think they would want to do that

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I agree. I was hoping they would launch at equal prices or the xbox one would be cheaper. with it being more expensive they will really have to have good marketing and a good start to keep momentum going

Well they definitely need the subsidized pay subscription thing so casuals can afford it, and given that's who they're equally aiming it at if they don't they're gonna suffer more than they already are.

Honestly Price is the biggest issue. DRM complaining is noise. For the mass market they will see the $499 vs $399 as the biggest issue that MS will have to do a great sales job to get past. The world is moving away from physical media and the era of used physical disks is going the way of the dodo. MS should, but wont go all in on this (at least not yet) and set the MSRP on games at $20 less than the PS4 games. With the DRM in place MS can justify it with publishers because they will get more volume.

I am still waiting to see the PS4 interface. Have they shown at all how you will move from playing a game to watching a movie on NetFlix? I suspect it will be very similar to PS3 and Xbox 360. Separate apps that need to shut down before the next can start up. MS needs to sell this difference very hard. Xbox One is a next generation device and PS4 is just a leap in processing and graphics power.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.
