It wouldn't make sense to have only one sku on the market that costs $299. They need a Wii U at $250! If they will only have one sku that is equal to the deluxe then the highest it should sell for is $279

If the competition comes in around $449 (as I think they will) then a WiiU with a packed in game for $299 is a very good deal so long as its also advertised to carry all the same new games (sans EA) which it will.

I mean you're looking at a console for $150 less (that's like three games), with at this point great 1st party titles and almost every single 3rd party title (newly releasing) all the while including at least one big new 1st/3rd party title for that $299 price point.

That's an attractive offer. Of course anyone could argue its more attractive for less money. But Nintendo still has to make a profit this year.

I know you're entitled to that idea. You even sold your PS3, but that is just your wishful thinking. I may take a bet that Wii U won't even have half of the games that will be multiplatform on X360/PS3/XBO/PS4/PC that are announced on E3, plus those that are already announced for at next-gen platforms (if you count them as newly releasing).

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

I don't think "recall" is the right word for this.

Realistically its just being discontinued and existing stock is being returned to Nintendo. "Recall" is usually only used for a massively defect (i.e. safety defect) device where even the consumer can return it.

Should change "recall" in title to "discontinued".

It's the title of the original article. Technically the 8GB version is not selling well, which is why Nintendo is recalling it. We think they'll recoat them as the premium models, which is very logical, but only Nintendo themselves know if this will be the case. So ''recalled'' is the correct term here.

If you remove EA (as I did) then you're not even close.

Would it not make more sense to just sell those models at a discount if they don't want to carry them anymore? That's what is generally done with discontinued models etc.

As dire as the news may sound, my guess is Nintendo is ceasing the 8GB SKU and replacing the mainboard and repackaging them as 32GB Wii Us.

Not really a major big deal, but an unfortunate end to the 8GB model as it couldn't quietly fade away.

Nintendo isn't discontinuing the 8GB model.(at least not in the UK)
Anyway both the premium and basic models aren't enough storage even for a casual gamer. It's a shame the Wii U doesn't support internal HDDs. It's unlikely casual gamers will go pure digital with the measly amount of storage offered. Which is weird since NIntendo has experienced how profitable the eShop can be.

It may depend on how much product Nintendo has in the UK vs. how much they have in the US.

However, it is unprecidented for a console manufacturer to recall the entire device, without an official recall (i.e. a safety problem).

Recalls cost money, so it is dire people (no necessarily directed at you VGKing).  Not only is Nintendo losing money on the recall, but they'll lose money to remanufacture the consoles for whatever purpose, whether it is to fix a problem or whether it is to replace the mainboard so that they're the 32GB model.  Nobody has ever recalled a product to improve it, only to make it whole.

And they might be doing it here first because the sales of the Wii U have been worse here than anywhere else.

If the product isn't moving at all, no.  Nintendo has two options, cut the price and take a bath, or keep the price, recall them, and remanufacture them as 32GB models.

My guess is sales of the 8GB model have drop so low that GameStop, especially, as Nintendo to intervene.

Guess we'll have to see, I'll be counting them. From the twitch livestream I see only Ubisoft and Warner Bros games that may end up on Wii U, from other publishers - very slim chance.

I'll get back to you when E3 is finished, be sure to do the same, we'll se who will be right.

So...tell me where I can fit a 3.5 HDD inside a WiiU.

WiiU supports external HDDs. Is that not enough for you people?!

So It's cheaper to have to consoles sent back, upgraded, then re-shipped back to the stores?

One would think Nintendo would just mark down the units X amount of dollars and not make anymore.

It's just that simple.

Of course not. People want to pay for overpriced first-party HDDs because they want their wallets to be ripped clean by these companies they love so much.
