Forums - Sony - How much did Sony make off of Gran Turismo 5?

Heavy Rain according to this article, made $130 million for Sony with only just 2 million+ sold copies.

Gran Turismo 5 was profitable from the first day it launched, thanks to GT5:P. But the question is: How much did it make for Sony? A BILLION DOLLARS? :O

Around the Network

How on earth? $60*2.000.000=$120.000.000

Even if they had received ALL of the money Heavy Rain cost to buy they wouldn't have made $182.000.000 (-$52.000.000=$130.000.000)...

already did the calculations once (though with the old GT5 numbers).

Though it needs to be said that the $130m for Heavy Rain was the generated revenue. Sony's split of the pie was far smaller than that.

A simple calculation proves this BEYOND any doubt.

That was clever...

Can't find my previous post about GT5 profits unfortunately.

But doing easy calculations:

we have it at 10.4m sold * $34 (for a full price game) = $353.6m

Now keep in mind:
The number above is only true if all games were sold at full price
$60m dev costs
easily $30m marketing

So ~$200m at the end is likely

Heavy rain could not have made THAT much money...

Its clear Heavy Rain sold well over its first 10 weeks of release and since then it has added around another 1.2 million.

Surely however, that 1.2 million could not have been sold at full price... it must have been discounted somewhat but the revenue figure does't really account for this (it kinda does, but it assumed a very small discount around 15% of RRP...)

Anyway, it sold very well.

GT5 did hold its value for a very long time, especially in Europe. however, you also have to remember GT5 was heavily bundled in Europe. If I remember correctly, GT5 bundle was the best selling at the time.

False assumption can only lead to a thread of wild guessing... It could die soon, especially because the biggest fan of GT can't post currently.

Just like in the US, the price fell in Europe (Platinum Edition) on October 2011, almost 11 months after launch.

Screen from German Amazon:

Official price cut to $40 in the US:

2nd official price cut happened in August 2012:

So about 6.8m units sold at full price.
1.6m after the first price cut.
2m after the second price cut.

About bundles, that's Sony's business and really impossible to tell how much profit they made from GT5 in the bundles and how much from the consoles.

i did the GT5 numbers in 2010 or 11, but have no idea wht thread it was. estimate $40 for each one sold.
not sure how much QD made.

My guess for GT5 would be somewhere around 400 million considering games sales and the large amount of DLC that the game sold.

I would also imagine that the Heavy Rain DLC added to its number but it is likely the 130 million is total revenue
