Forums - Sony - Sony officially states that PlayStation 4 will not have DRM against used games

Yeah, they said this from the beginning but people didn't want to listen.

They won't implement it on first party games but third parties can if they want, meaning whatever multiplat has DRM on Xbox One will have it on the PS4 version as well.

No it doesn't.

My main problem with the fight against drm is that it goes against everything we currently do with media.

Music pays royalties, online and physical.
Movies, books, tv shows, all pay royalties on the used market.

Yet for some reason games are supposed to be different. Drm is needed.

No they don't. You buy used anything and not a dime of it is going back to whoever the creator or publisher was.  All profit goes to the used dealer.  It's bullshit how video game publishers are the only ones that think that they're different and they force this on the market.

This is incorrect.  For example if you sell your cd to a used music store the resale of that cd collects a royalty,  Same with used book, and other intellectual property.  If you redistribute media property for the purpose if resale a royalty is collected, except on games.  The concept that a games is more like a table than a song is ridiculous.  When you buy the game you are not buying the rights to the game, you don't own it, you own the right to use it, and if you sell it the liscence under which you purchased the game is removed and the new seller is responsible for royalties.

Let pirates do what they want, you don't cave into to theft by allowing it to happen you stand against it like any other wrong.

Casuals will shell out money for whatever is marketed to be the most buzzworthy product in their market. When you see shit like that gif you put up you can tell Sony doesnt give a crap about casuals and I've been saying this forever. Sony knows they exist and they can help the sales but even though the tech is there they dont support it.

Yeah, you can convince yourself of that just like you convinced yourself that PS4 wouldn't have any DRM.

Casuals only have a general view of products in the games industry not an indepth one. They only see on the surface and marketing is key for people with that viewpoint. DRM is an issue but lets see what Sony says further about third parties shall we? They said there is no DRM, so we'll see how much truth that holds at E3. They said you can enjoy your games without an internet connection at all which is like a slap in the face to DRM. If you use a third parties game...its no differnt from an EA origin watchdog account. Sony left it up to third parties so they can make asses of themselves when the backlash occurs.

You keep telling yourself that.

Dont talk rubbish all games have DRM on xbox one with no effort or cost to the publishers, only those willing to go out of there way will bring DRM to PS4, judging by how little 3rd party DRM is on PS3 even tho it is possible, im guessing we wont see much at all. Unless Sony has put a system in which is easy for 3rd parties to use, which now seems highly unlikely if they had no plans to use it themselves.

Exactly. This is all we know right now. Sony isnt implementing DRM but so far it seems they are leaving it up to third parties. This could be mended further before E3 because Sony is known to listen to consumers where their consoles are concerned, if at all definitley better than MS. If third parties implement it, it will be a wall like Origin and the online pass system which will track EA's games.

It's a little funny to see everyone think sony will do something because MS did. Last gen it was xbox live gold, pay to play online, Sony will follow it. This time it is DRM, Sony says it didn't follow it, people make stupid comparisons with online passes while they pay to play online essentially getting locked their mp component from all their games. Even new games.

Would be interesting to see this gen indeed.

So true.  But, I guess I can't blame them.  They are worried.  Really no other way to put it.  They know MS has greatly limited the audience they can sell to, now.  And while they won't say it, MS's TV centric reveal has them worried, as well.  Just reminds me of the past 3 E3s for MS, where core gaming has taken a back seat to mulitmedia features and Kinect.

I mean, why else can Sony say the PS4 can be played without being connected to the internet ever, yet they still have to convince others (or maybe themselves) that 3rd parties are going to be able to do DRM?  The only way they could do it is for multi-player, as some have done this gen.  Of course, that doesn't matter if you have crap or no internet.

You guys are hilarious. MS's first press release focused on the casual side of things, their E3 press conference will focus mainly on the games. This was a brilliant strategy because the people they were trying to appeal with in the first conference are not likely to be interested in E3 and would have missed the very marketing MS wanted them to see had MS focused on the games instead of the other features.

Yep, cause there would have been SO MANY casuals watching the reveal.  This "E3 excuse" was just started to combat the negative reaction to the conference.  And I bet that, even though Major Nelson said otherwise, they will still focus some time on the TV features at E3.

It's called the first sale doctrine and by law means that the copyright holder has no say in what is done with that item after it's sold.

Exactly what I was going to post.

It was such a brilliant strategy because casuals won't be interested in E3 conference, but would watch the reveal? Give me a break...

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

No direspect but you are completely WRONG, Sure there E3 focus will be games no doubt but now there playing cleanup because of there first press conference. You cant say what they did was samrt because they marketed a console with their press conference to the casual side of gamers when (sigh) the Casuals werent even home to watch the conference, they were either at school or at work, while really the only people that were watching were the harcore gamers. And you cant say that what they showed was a huge success, i mean everything they showed was Cool but NONE of it was revolutionary. The Fact that they had shown No GAMPLAY for a GAME CONSOLE is pretty stupid but hey that is just my opinion (that of a gamer). And then to top it off with all of the rumors swirling around the new XBOX about DRM and Always Online should have been addressed these, i mean its not like the fans didnt want to know about this stuff. But I mean hey u dont have to take my word for it just look at how the internet has reacted and tell me how successful the console has become, I mean gamespot.com which has a huge xbox fanbase on their website exploded with how wrong the conference was and how upset they were i mean  they did a survey of what console they were going to choose, PS4 or XBone and 90% chose the PS4 in the US alone  ....
Soooooo yeah the xbox press confernce was a great success <----(sarcasm).
