Forums - Gaming - Square Enix: Long Development Periods are “Dishonest” – and Unprofitable

I still don't understand how they can say Tomb Raider failed to meet sales expectations, when it pretty much shattered everyone else's expectations since the franchise has had one foot in the grave for almost a decade now with mediocre after mediocre release.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Can't believe they're blaming business models. "Packaged software" worked just fine for them while they made games that people wanted to play. Changing the business model - to F2P, to DLC, to digital only - doesn't make people like the game more.

Simple they had unrealistic expectations for the game, especially given that it was released at the end of a fiscal period so that after only being out for a few weeks, they had executives talking to the media saying it failed to meet what they intended and is one of the reasons they lost money.

You don't say

I have to disagree with you. I think every Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider game has been stellar.

Pretty much everything Eidos related did great this gen, but they all had the same problem.

4 1/2 years from Tomb Raider Underworld to Tomb Raider (not counting the Lara Croft arcade game)
Deus Ex Human Revolution announced 2007 (came out 2011) and 8 years between it and Deus Ex Invisible War
Thief still not released (announced 2009)
6 years between Hitman Blood Money and Hitman Absolution

That's over 4 years for every title in their most known franchises.

Instead they should have hired more devs to get the games out every ~2 years.

I remember when Final Fantasy X was being made. There were trailers, gameplay videos, cutscenes, new screenshots, every few months. Now we get nothing. How effed is management at that company that they realize 6 years to late that what they did before is better than what they do now? Square always had smaller games being made, Bushido Blade, Brave Fencer Musashi, Threads of Fate, Mana, etc. Those games never had the flash or budgets of Final Fantasy, but now they realize they should have been making these smaller titles in between Final Fantasy games? This guy is as clueless as Wada if he thinks cell phone games is the solution to their problems.

As for the remaining two initiatives, Matsuda said Square Enix will begin producing new, console-quality games for smart devices instead of using them as dumping grounds for ports and social games, and that it will stop trying to develop universally appealing games for a global market – instead focusing on region-specific titles.

Noooooo... they still need to port Final Fantasy 7 first....

Who cares? Nothing about that game aged well. Nerd rage on an iOS-only release would be the only satisfying thing about it.

I'm all for them making high-quality, new content for mobile, but I don't much like the idea of region-specific games. I want to play that weird Japanese stuff. Perhaps just not Square's Japanese stuff... okay, maybe I see your point, Square.
