Forums - Nintendo - How would you even modernize Star Tropics?

Every time and E3 or Nintendo Direct or any other big video game event is announced or coming near, you get a lot of rumors about old Nintendo IPs being revived.  A big one is Star Tropics.

My question is, how would you take a quirky game like Star Tropics and make it into a major seller?  Star Tropic is a weird game with aliens, robots, and dolphins and a protagonist that figths them off with a yo-yo and baseball bat.  It always reminded me of a Zeldafied Earthbound, actually (Star Tropics X Earthbound, do it!)

Here is part of the plot synopsis from wikipedia:

The game follows the protagonist Mike Jones as he visits his uncle, an archaeologist named Dr. Steve Jones (whom the island's inhabitants call "Dr. J."), on C-Island. When Mike arrives at Dr. J.'s house in Coralcola, he finds that Dr. J. has gone missing. Dr. J.'s assistant, Baboo, allows Mike to use Dr. J.'s submarine, which is piloted by a robot named NAV-COM, to search for him. On a nearby island, Mike finds a bottle with a letter from Dr. J. addressed to him. The letter states that his uncle has been abducted by aliens and that he needs Mike to save him. Traveling to many isles of the South Seas to find his uncle, Mike encounters monsters, puzzles, several quirky characters, and a number of intelligent animals, such as Peter, a talking parrot, and a mother dolphin who pleads with Mike to find her son.

It's a funny game, but I can't see it ever being more then a fun niche game.  I always thought a Star Tropics sequel could work done Duke Nukem style, not as crude or offensive as Duke, but as a parody that deconstructs a lot of the tropes of modern adventure games.  Make it play like uncharted with some Zelda style mechanics thrown in, and makes the plot off the wall but have it reference a lot of modern adventure games.

I think this would be a great game to modernize. It would fit perfectly on the 3DS in isometric view, with the ability to get a top-down view if needed.

The stones you would jump on could look more realistic, maybe actual stones if need be, or alien plates. It would be cool to carry forth the spooky theme of startropics, and the happy-tropical theme as well. I would like to see a well-made Mike with good emotions when he gets hit and looks cool when using his yoyo.

I would love a game like this and if it's well done I would most likely buy it.

Not sure if you're aware, but there's also Zoda's Revenge: Star Tropics 2 also on the NES. The scenes in the game were more of a comedy like how you're explaining, with Mike Jones(who?) getting pulled into other timelines with cave men, Cleopatra, Sherlock Holmes, etc, then making jokes about it.

The gameplay is the same but smoother, where you can move and attack in eight directions and have a controllable jump.  Mike also gets upgraded weapons rather than the Yoyo he's had from the first game.

I think if they were to update the series, it'd be best if they left it in 2D. But if they did update it to 3D it'd be best if the world was designed like Zelda 64 and if Mike Jones controlled similar to link but with his own weapons. Have other weapons still in the game, like the disposable baseball bats, berries, snow man ice attack, etc, but leave the Yoyo as his main weapon since a throwing weapon would make it too easy with a lock on style gameplay.

Bonus points for the first one to get what I mean in the parenthesis.  You don't get anything, just props, so pat yourself on the back.

I would take away all the colors, change it to a first person perspective, and give Mike an M16A1 instead of a yo-yo. Also, instead of Mike his name would be Sarge.

Switch from the original Mike Jones to a nephew or son or grandson for the protagonist, maybe even going for a custom avatar depending on the resources available.

Next, in order to differentiate it from Legend of Zelda games, either make it heavy action or puzzle based game with a strong humor tinged storyline. If meant for the Wii U, I'd have the idea of one of the protagonist's main tools being a tablet device to be at the core of the game's design.

I'm aware of Zoda's Revenge, but I've never actually played it.  The only reason I have even played Star Tropics is because back in my colleged days (way back in 2002 or 2003) a friend of mine and I got on a NES kick, and ended up purchasing a top loading NES (for 70 dollars at the time) and decided to beef up or NES collection at second hand stores.

I can see a game made in the same style working as an E-Shop or 3DS title, especially after seeing the new Link to the Past.  They could even reuse that same engine, to keep it super authentic, lol.

If it was done in the style of a 3D Zelda, I think it would have to be more action oriented (like the relationship between A Legend of Zelda and Star Tropics).  I would imagine it would be more like Darksiders.  Control wise, as the aesthetics, tone, and design would all be very different.

Finally took the time to look this up. What was the appeal?

Besides the box art.....Oh, is it an RPG?

Nintendo could win just by having a bunch of RPGS

It wasn't an RPG as much as it was Zelda with more action and platforming, and a really weird sense of humor and style that sticks with people.

Well, if Retro is doing the project like the rumor suggests, then you'd never know as they are the ones that turned Metroid into a first person adventure game lol.

dang it.  I was going to same thing more or less but stretch it out to a paragraph changing things little by little.

I watched the first 10 minutes of the game being played and reading your description I can see it being similar to like the most recent Tomb Raider or something.

Obviously not as much killing, or enemies aren't human but weird ass monsters, and instead of guns having more fantasy type weapons.

But that's how I see this game. It's kind of like exploring in Tomb Raider, seeing ancient stuff and aliens and so on with puzzles.

Maybe this is Nintendo's attempt at Tomb Raider and/or Uncharted
