Forums - Nintendo - Why do you think the Wii U will fail, when the 3DS came out of a similar horrible slump and even the Vita has stuck in the fight?

Ya know what really scares me right now?

Sony. I know for some awkward reason Nintendo games don't really have a problem with being used-Gamestop pricing is too telling of this. And because the bring your disk to friends and play is part of Nintendo's "toy maker" policy.

But let's think about this....EA discontinued online passes entirely. They would not do this unless the PS4 had some DRM in some form. It might be publisher basis but I don't know. FIFA is EA's largest franchise. (Is it?) And most popular on Playstation consoles. Sony 1st party might do this too then.

I can see if both PS4 and Xbone are similar in this, people might go to WiiU more.

But for now, WiiU really has no games. Like the fk man. I'm kinda pissed. Also, you're wrong about the 3DS making a comeback it didn't. The Vita just flopped.

3DS pretty much has a monopoly of the handheld market because of that and they have Monster Hunter and all that biz.

WiiU has some tougher competition. Xbone-Let's put this to a wait for now. PS4 however is looking very appealing.

Also a factor is that more and more people are going to PC gaming, as it gets more affordable and other stuff like that.

This console generation's gonna be a toughie.

I can't understand the thinking of some people. It's sold over 3m already and imo it should do another 3m between now and November and should do another 4m from November until the end of the year. Those figures should be doable considering that we're going to see Wii Fit U, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Game & Wario, Wind Waker HD, 3D Mario and Mario Kart 8 all released before the end of the year, plus I suspect one or two surprises that we don't know about yet.

There are 24 weeks until November (starting with the week ending May 25th).  Considering the performance of Game & Wario in Japan, I doubt it will have a significant impact on hardware sales.  So let's go with Pikmin 3 as the point where sales recover.  That is still 8 weeks away in Japan, and 10/11 in EU/NA.  For the sake of simplicity, let's just say there will by 9 more weeks of low sales.

Even if we are optimistic, and say the Wii U can maintain 30k per week, we'd be looking at only 270k in that time period.  That would leave 2.73 million for the last 15 weeks or 180k per week.  In Japan, the first Pikmin game boosted Gamecube sales from 10k to 25k.  The second game saw sales rise from 5,500 to 8,700.  Considering those figures, a 7.6x sales boost seems unlikely.

Three million between those dates would also mean sales 49% higher than the 360 and 29% higher than the PS3 for the same time periods in 06/07.  Considering how much the Wii U has lagged for the first part of the year, it does not seem logical that it would suddenly outpace them by such a margin.

All depends on what you consider 'succeed' or 'fail'.

Will WiiU sales pick up with new games and an eventual price cut. Yes, of course.

Will WiiU ever come close to Wii's sales? No never.

With a lack of 3rd party support and zero interest from casual gamers WiiU's sales will be most reflective of Gamecube's. Gamecube was a profitable system but a sales disappointment. WiiU could become a profitable if underwhelming sales-wise system.

Re: 3DS comparison. Nintendo's handhelds have always dominated and 3DS is benefiting from Vita's disaster getting vertually ALL 3rd party support. It's sales should still be better in the west than they are but the sales are decent and it'll do fine.

Nintendo's home consoles are another story altogether. Nintendo's traditional IPs have never make their home consoles major successes - not since SNES at any rate. Wii Sports/Wii Fit and motion controls rocketed Wii to stardom and major success. Not Mario, Zelda, Brawl or Metroid - although Mario Party, Kart and NSMBWii all benefitted greatly from Wii's new audience. WiiU does not have an inticing hook to attract that audience back from Kinect/Mobiles and in fact, I've long maintained, the gamepad is exactly the wrong direction - it puts off casuals not attracts them. Lacking horsepower and 3rd power support WiiU has nothing to offer 'core' gamers. This leaves WiiU with strictly Nintendo fans - who will buy it once games come out. But that's 20-30m sales top I wager. Now Nintendo could pull a Nintendogs - bring out a game that attracts an all new audience and boosts sales - but no such game has been announced to date.

spurge - just for your reference if you think the 3DS was doing horribly before the turn around the wiiU is doing about 1/3 that. not saying it can't be turned around but the situation is also a lot worse than with the 3DS.

Thank you for posting this. Thank you. The 3DS didn't sell that great until the price drop and killer 1st party games. If the 8GB goes to $250, the 32GB goes to $300, and a new SKU with 500- GB varying in price, that would instantly help the Wii U. Keep in mind: if a price cut marries 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, and Smash Bros., Nintendo won't have a worry in the world. They need 1st party software to drive sales combined with a price cut. Nintendo can overcome this type of failure. They just did a year and a half ago.

You know what? Nobody dogs the 3DS anymore. Nobody posts how it is destroying the Vita but we sure are quick to post "Nintendo Wii U is outsold by PS3". Do you know that the 3DS has outsold Vita and the remainder of the competition for months on end. The Wii U will turn around by this holiday season, just as the 3DS doom posts ceased, the Wii U's will as well.

Bloody hell, Spurge! What did you do now to get the red BAN? O.o'

OP: 'cause most 3rd parties backed out and left Nintendo fending for the WiiU themselves that made it worse. Plus as other said, it's 7 months going with only some finger-full of games release.
I gave'em 6 months to have a proper turn around, but even just one extra is pushing it and it seems it's not stopping until August, which severely shall cost them more than the Gamecube sales... I would fear for the worst if I were you. It's time to get real. -_-' It would take a miracle to get back even 1/3rd of the Wii sales.

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

The Wii U isn't going to fail, but the Wii U is doing very bad. When the 3DS came out, it was selling worse than the two HD consoles, but it sold no less than 64,000 a week. The Wii U has sold below 40,000 multiple weeks in a row. That's the difference. 60,000 one week is fairly good considering that's as low as it got. 24,000 in one week is very bad.

Edited post.  Accidentally stated months instead of weeks.
