Never before in the history of the console wars has 2nd place meant so much to so many lmao!

It probably meant in the Genesis(MegaDrive)/SNES generation. There weren't as MANY consoles though xD

True but in that gen people were arguing about who beat who to win 1st place, not who beat who to win 2nd place lol.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Never before has the sales of second and third place been so high, and so close, either.

Also, agreed, the spin in this thread is mezmersing.

For 6 whole years 'behind in global sales' was the argument, now that's not the case, 'behind in profits, so they didnt really win second' becomes the argument - I'm sorry but sony could have gone out of business entirely, it still wouldn't change the simple truth that in sales, the PS3 has passed the X360, you can spin it however you want, but it's simple fact that not only has the PS3 outsold the X360, it's done so with a 1-1.5 year handicap, and regardless of how sony has fared as a result of poor financial and economical choices, for that achievment it has to be commended.

On an off topic note, were I an xbox fan, I'd be a little worried going forward in to next gen, as the timing of this overtake coupled with the mostly negative news over the Xbone's reveal spells trouble for the xbones launch, in a market where industry and public attitude towards the PlayStation band is rapidly gaining traction, I've no doubt the Xbone will sell well in the US and maybe well or at least decently in UK, but those of you hoping or expecting the Xbone to storm out of the gate and leave the PS4 for dust, are in for several years of making excuses.

Never before in the history of the console wars has 2nd place been 1st place for the core gaming market. Until the wii is surpassed anyways.

Next target: Wii.

LOL good luck. 20 mil is much bigger than 8.

It all depends on how much PS3 will resist in the market.

PS3 has another 2 years of good sales imo.

Uhhh.  Why?

People should take note of what's going on with Wii.  Selling two machines side by side is NOT going to do Sony any justice down the road.  People who buy a PS3 when a PS4 is around might *NEVER* buy a PS4 and instead just skip to the next generation.

If you ask me, all the companies are lobbing all sorts of numbers around but I can't be the only one to look at what is so far a slight incremental update in terms of quality of game and then look at a $400-500 next gen box?   These numbers are lunacy.  Sony is thinking they're going to sell 11 million PS3 by March?  To who???  And who's going to buy their PS4 if they're selling 11 million PS3?   I think they're looking at what Nintendo has done with their handhelds and are thinking they can do it on a console or something.

People fail to understand what's pushed a stupid number of PS3 sales...a bluray player.  That advantage is gone when Xbox one comes out.  Going to be interesting to see if people still support sony when they can get an ms box with bluray.

People own computers already.

The Wii stopped selling because it stopped getting support from Nintendo and third parties. The PS2 continued to sell respectable numbers for years after the PS3's launch, but most of those people did eventually go on to buy PS3s.

And I think the blu-ray player thing stopped being relevant around five years and 50 million sales ago. When did you last watch a blu-ray? Streaming services have become the definitive way to watch films now.

German Telekom, the largest provider in Europe, has just announced bandwidth caps beginning in Jan 2016. Good luck with streaming movies from 2016 on.

It won't sell 11m consoles until march, these numbers are a bit unrealistic imo.   But it can easily sell 8-9m by then.

I doubt a lot of people still buy PS3s because of its bluray players capabilities anyway.      People interested in a videogame for its BD player will go for the lower price option and that will likely be PS3 in 2014.

Why would anyone pay $400+ for one of the new consoles because of BD if the old console is capable of doing the same costing $200 ?

And you're not considering the fact that PS4 will also be a BD player.
