Doubble vowls are pronounced longer. just "e" is pronounced as a short e, "ei" or "ee" are pronounced as a long e

same goes for the following

aa = long a
ii = long i
uu = long u
ee = long e
ei = long e
oo = long o
ou = long o

in romaji these can either be written as seen above or with a line above the vowls like this: "Tōkyō" (in the west this stuff tends to be dropped though so we know tokyo with short o's.)

eg: 先生 = せんせい = se n se i - but instead of the "i" at the end you just say a long "e"

In don't think i understand what you mean with "you're not sure about kanji" though, Kanji and hiragana can be substituted.
