Forums - Sony - Sony forecast only 5 million Vita and PSP unit sales in FY14

no one would really be upset if sony went console only. i hope vita is their last handheld.

Sony clearifies why they expect 5 million Vitas to be sold;

That kinda looks like putting Vita under the rug. But as long as it can maintain some momentum in Japan and keeps receiving niche games I'm happy.

Quite a pathetic number.

Confirms lackluster support and no price cut.

This worrys me. See I don't even want my vita anymore as its not something I see worth pumping money into when the PS3 games as still flowing so strong and PS4 is coming so soon. If it wasn't for Killzone I would sell it right now tbh :(

let me ask you this, what kind of speed did you expect for games to be developed for with the PSVita?

the fact that the PSVita has 128 MB of dedicated GPU ram vs the Nintendo's 3DS which has 6 MB of Dedicated GPU ram, to get development of games for the PSVita its going to take much longer and have a much higher budget. That or you are going to end up with quick pick up and play games being front n center for the main part until the projects get done. They are not just going to snap their finger's and have these games made real quick. unlike many handhelds the PSVita's hardware is not like a handheld, its more along the lines of a living room game console in the portable case.

1.This has to be the worst argument on any Internetforum in the world...bravo !
2. This is bullshit, the Vita uses stock mobilephone/tablet components (Arm 9 for the CPU, Power VR for the Cpu), the 3DS has a more unusual Gpu than the Vita=

first of all the PSVita's chipset is not completely Stock, for instance

http://www.chipworks.com/blog/technologyblog/2012/07/05/sonys-ps-vita-uses-chip-on-chip-sip-3d-but-not-3d/

the SGX543MP4 OF THE PSVita is also once again tweaked with "+" enhancement's not just a higher clock rate.

the 3DS has a more unusual Gpu than the Vita

that depends on what you count as unusual

As a matter of fact the 3DS's GPU information is quite well known and its performance

and no the GPU inside the  3DS is not that  unusual  is a single core Pica 200

here is the chip layout for the 3DS:

not only is PS3 selling very well but PS4 is also scheduled for this year, so its no wonder sony dont expect to sell many playstation vita's. PS3 and PS4 are hurting the vita.

That forecast looks to me like Sony knows that they got nothing to turn this around. There will probably token effort until christmas with Tearaway, Killzone and maybe Gravity Rush 2 and by this time next year the Vita will be a PS4 remote play machine, which kinda sucks for me since I am not planning to buy one anytime soon.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Vita has been on the market for well over a year now. Soul Sacrifice just launched, and Killzone and Tearaway are still about half a year away from being released.

But for the sake of clarity, let me rephrase "never really supported" as "piss poor support".

wait what kind of support were you expecting so quick? that's what get's me, there seem's to be a consensus going that Sony could just snap the finger's and there would be a ton of software for a handheld with these kind of spec's! do people not get that this handheld has dedicated 128 MB of GPU ram, the most of any handheld, smarphones have 64 MB, the 3DS has 6 MB.

it just seem's many gamer's are expecting these games to be done too quick, when the PSVita's Games can require larger teams and more resources and longer development times.

I think many are being very un realistic on the speed it takes to make a game like Uncharted :GA or Tearaway or killzone for the PSVita

Yeah, the Vita is really dead in the water. It will be Sonys last handheld.

MY GOD, you should be mass reported for the obvious trolling you're doing.

On topic, it's clear Sony isn't planning any price drops for the Vita in the west. They probably prefer lower sales rather than makes losses.

How is it trolling?

Can you name a mainstream console that sold less than the Vita? Do you really think Sony will do another one?

Yeah, the Vita is really dead in the water.

The Vita is not a mainstream console and not every console has sold like the PSX, PS2, DS right out of the gate. Sony will not abandon the foothold they have gotten in the handheld market. So yes, they will support the Vita and will release a succesor in a couple of years.

Haha! Vita isn't a mainstream console?

Well why are they putting their major IPs on it? Why is it being marketed? Why are there displays at major retailers?

I dunno if this is the last Sony handheld platform, but this isn't going so well. Not much to look forward to in 2013 etiher. Atleast nothing anticipated to move a lot of hardware.

Im really considering the fact tha vita will have a lonely death far more likely after the results than before, I mean they are only expecting 5 million for both their handhelds and Im sure the PSP can sell over a million this fiscal year so that mean less than 4 millions for vita or less than 333k monthly worldwide and remote play will do nothing, the wiiu can already do that without needing to buy a 250 dollar accesory and I really dont see tearaway or killzone selling well, I mean tearaway doesnt look like something it could sell on the vita and killzone is being sent to die with another killzone out at launch for the PS4.
Sony also looks like it saw the japanese sales after the price cut and though they were bad because it doesnt look like they will price drop it in the west and prefer to keep the price without increasing the sales
