Why NBA center Jason Collins is coming out now

"I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay.

I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, "I'm different." If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."

please click the link, it's too much text to post here.

it's really crazy that there are still almost no athletes (and not only in usa) who openly said that. i hope more will follow and there will be a time when athletes don't think that they have to hide their identity just  because they fear that they would maybe not get a contract anymore in any team.

haha yeah that was indeed weird to say!

I'm just waiting for a gay (male) active tennis player... hopefully within the top 30 :P

No wonder he seemed so eager to take charges and always seem to firmly grasp onto the basket ball!

His career is pretty much over so coming out now will give him little to no negative repercussions. On top of that he never was very relevant to begin with.

I actually think that this is pretty brave on his part and not for the reasons that you probably think. It could affect whether a veteran journeyman like himself finds a job next year. This might sound terrible, but it has to be said by someone.

Pretty much. Anyone who follows the NBA or pro sports in general would know this. It's a lot easier for a  34-year-old journeyman free agent who was never that good to begin with to come out of the close than for a 22-year old youngster full of potential and a ton of years in the league ahead of him. I'm waiting for a gay athlete to tell the world either at the beginning of his career or in his prime.

He averaged like 3 points per game this season. His sexual orientation is the least of his problems job wise.

You are giving him too much credit he barely averaged over a point per game this season.
