Forums - Gaming Discussion - 3DS compare to the Wii, so how does the 3DS compare to the Wii?

High Voltage Software claimed that the 3DS is, in some ways, more powerful than the Wii. Between the small screen and better texture and shading ability (as well as apparently being easier to develop graphics for in general), it's quite feasible for 3DS games to be graphically superior.

So basically these mothertruckers admitted that the 3DS has more Polygons & more better Shaders, then the Wii. And they also note that after those qualities, well you got the additional quality created by the screen size being smaller.....which is basically just overkill.

Since when does "better textures and shading" mean "more polygons"?

And the small screen size is a strike AGAINST 3DS, not for it; it means its pushing less resolution per frame than the Wii.

Well I thought the smaller screen would make textures look better. Plus doesn't better textures mean more polygons?, or is it pixel performence that makes better textures? Or what?

The smaller screen will make it look better, yes, because you won't see it up close, but if we're talking in purely technical terms, then the smaller screen also means less pixels.

Polygons are the three dimensional shapes that make up a game world.

Textures are the 2D images that cover those shapes, to make wood look like wood or a carpet look like carpet.

I think you got it the other way round. Wii can run more polygons and make use of higher-res textures in comparison with the 3DS. 3DS, however, has the better shading capability. If you compare a few multiplatform games like Monster Hunter Tri and Donkey Kong Country you'll see what I'm talking about.

Well RE Revelaytons looks better than anything on Wii, pretty much.

Better than Galaxy1/2 and MP3? No

But it does look better than a majority of them.

Resident Evil: Revelations was a first year 3DS game, so I'm interested to see what Capcom does with the 3rd Resident Evil 3DS game that was in pre-production back in April 2012.

Mario Galaxy and MP3 were first year Wii games too.
