Forums - Nintendo - Iwata Laughs, Becomes CEO of Nintendo of America

Reggie has no power, he wasn't even the CEO, just the COO (which he still is today).

NOA has no power to create games or greenlight projects on their own.

NOA's power was stripped after Yamauchi retired. Before then, he would let Howard Lincoln, Minoru Arakawa and others at NOA do a lot more with autonomy .... things like the discovery of Rare and subsequent development of Donkey Kong Country, GoldenEye, and other hits, the idea to create Retro Studios, the Star Wars games Nintendo used to get, NBA Courtside, Ken Griffey Jr., Nintendo Sports, etc. all of that came from NOA in the past.

Today NOA is nothing but a distribution channel and a rather crappy marketing division, and nothing else.

It's not a coincidence that Rare/Factor 5/Silicon Knights/Left Field/etc. were all given the boot and NST was scaled back dramatically over the years also (though it seems now they are finally staffing up again).

Now answer who made the decisions for which games got published.

Would Xenoblade really have made any difference on the Wii? I know Nintendo fans (myself included) like the belly ache about it, but it would've sold like 100,000 copies and then fizzled off into the bargain bin just like Sin & Punishment 2.

The reason NOA doesn't want to publish games like that is because they know they don't sell well, and they don't want to damage relationships with retail partners.

But really today this is a non-issue because Nintendo has embraced digital downloads finally, so they can release every game and then feel their way out with how much of a retail presence they want for certain games. This is basically the model they used for Fire Emblem on the 3DS.

Japan is actually the contracting market, not the other way around. There is no console market left, it's basically become a country where there's only one viable new platform (the 3DS, which is selling slower than the DS there).

No one is asking for a GTA Mario.

I think it is a fair question though to ask why a game on the scale of say a Halo/Metroid Prime ... something that could be real show piece for the Wii U ... why such a game was not greenlit and made a priority for the Wii U when Cafe kits were first shipping 2 years ago (now).

That's the type of lack of vision that Nintendo really suffers from. They figured people would just eat up another Mario and that was all the work they had to do.

Even 1990s Nintendo understood this and was willing to bank on games like GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and finance things like Eternal Darkness and the Star Wars games. NCL today .... doesn't get it.

Japanese studios aren't shutting down or "streamlining" left and right, that's what I meant. Nintendo is actually expanding.

You know what I meant when I said GTA Mario, it was also a play on the Robot Chicken thing. People are clamoring for Nintendo to change their franchises to fit the adult western audience, which would be a mistake considering how poorly those types games have been performing lately (few exceptions aside).

They likely planned this soft launch situation. Get a head start, launch with lots of titles (more than the 360/PS3 did at their time) , give third parties some breathing room (EA shafted them and Ubi got scared/bullied), and bring the heavy hitters closer to the launches of their competitor's systems to make theirs seem more appealing due to the dirth of variety/titles/what have you on other platforms. Thinking the Wii U would sell incredibly mostly on its own merits and fickle third parties was a mistake, but it still managed to sell better than the PS3/360 did at launch, with more games too.

We have absolutely zero clue what has been green lit and what announced games look like aside from X and Yarn Yoshi though there is a rumor that whatever engine Retro made for their game puts out better than KZ3 fidelity (in this early stage) at 60fps....stunning. It was also pulled before E3 at the last minute because someone (See: NOA) didn't think it was ready, which led to the extended NintendoLand demo. Iwata wasn't even physically at E3 so he wouldn't have made that call as the different divisions are allowed to (mostly) do their own thing. It was a NA event, with NOA's plans plus NCL's guidance on the overall system and its launch.

The vast majority of their teams have been working for 2+ years on titles, given the transition to HD that could have caused some issues at first, that should be worked out. Pikmin 3 was delayed because that team was spread between that, NSMB2, NSMB2 DLC, NSMBU and likely NSLU. Just about every other team worked in conjunction with smaller dev studios (Brownie Brown, Monster Games, Grezzo, Retro task force of awesome, etc) or were a smaller group of the team to produce 3DS title after 3DS title, but as they finished, they moved over to Wii U dev.

"They figured people would just eat up another Mario and that was all the work they had to do" isn't true and you know it. They have been toiling away to make sure the titles are top notch by the time they launch, like I said....soft launch planned with a blowout this fall. If they had released a major franchise (not counting NSMBU) it would have been rushed, buggy, possibly ugly, maybe broken and not at all what Nintendo is known for....pure polish and solid gameplay. Thing is though....people HAVE eaten up NSMBU....over half the install base owns the game.

NOA is the one who "doesn't get it." The terrible marketing is only present in the US, the UK has much better commercials for all products....I have only seen the crappy launch one here. Japan gets more advertising than anyone and Famitsu regularly covers Nintendo. When Tatsumi Kimishima took over at NOA in 2006, things took a downturn, localization became horrific, and he was able to let the Wii coast on it's motion controls and didn't know how to handle selling the Wii U. NCL has seen that the indie scene is an emerging market and thus is covering the Unity license for all developers....not NOA just for American devs even though that is where a majority is.

This is why Iwata took over responsibility.  He knows how to interact with developers since he IS one. He knows how to interact with consumers as evidenced by the Nintendo Directs, he isn't just a corporate suit who is selling us something (even if he is selling us something). Kimishima-san knew none of these things which is why Reggie was the figurehead for NOA, but was just that....a spokesperson.

I dont get, I though Iwata was Nintendo (all regions) CEO. I though that because he was the only dude in every video for all the devices they made in every region. And now he is NOA CEO?? So he has been demoted?

Anyone hoping for Iwata's downfall are just, quite frankly, horrible horrible people.

Whether you are a huge supporter of Nintendo or not, there is literally ZERO reason to dislike the guy. Saturo Iwata is the very very RARE case, in this day and age, of a major game company being headed by someone that *gasp* not only used to create games, but is a gamer himself. So unlike 99% of big company head presidents out there, he actually understands not only the product, but the consumer as well. He doesn't need yes-men and focus group analysts to come kiss his butt and tell him what recent trends show consumers allegedly want.

We're talking about the man who helped make Lolo, Kirby, Earthbound, and Smash Bros. for fuck's sake.

But, sadly, much like pro sports, when a team has a spot of trouble, the coach usually gets blamed, even if he has zero control over what's going down. And while I do absolutely think Nintendo as a whole should have had at least a few of those 3DS projects as Wii U projects, as 3DS almost has too many first party games coming recently while Wii U (which needs them) in the last few months has none (namely Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario 4, having Monster Games make a pointless port of DKCR when they should be working on a new Wii U title). I don't however think that he exactly PLANNED for what looked on paper like a fantastic Wii U launch lineup, to have not done as well as expected.

One of the primary things that hurt Nintendo in NA, I believe, is that the original round of commercials for Wii U were atrocious, with craptacular "dubstep" soundtracks, and nonsensical imagery that showed or told nothing to the average consumer about what Wii U really is, and why they should buy one. Whoever was responsible for that commercial in the NOA marketing department should step down, not Iwata. On the same token, I think Reggie has been a good thing for Nintendo overall as well, as while he has a corporate/advertising background, he is also a self-admitted avid gamer, and while he certainly comes off a bit as a "corporate PR guy", which....well, he is, it's also undeniable that when he talks at least about certain games, you can tell that he has genuine enthusiasm for them.

So yup. Iwata's fine. Personally I hope he sticks around as Prez. for a long time to come. He was personally responsible for the mega-success of DS and Wii, and people seem to forget that. He gave himself a pay cut when 3DS initially sold under-par (when he really didn't need to), something I don't seem to remember the presidents of Sony or MS doing at any point. Just saying. The dude just seems like a hell of a guy. Not really sure how you could root against that.

Iwata is the President/CEO of Nintendo Company Ltd. The Directs were created to give the company a direct line of communication with the consumers to avoid PR leaks and stuff like that. Much of the information covered in the Directs is ubiquitous between the regions so there is no need to record several different versions with different people, he can speak English and subtitles can be added for other European languages.  Each region has their own CEO in charge of operations for that region. They green light studio projects for review by the company, decide on marketing themselves, handle events, relations with third parties in said region and so on.

Iwata is keeping his overall position as head honcho, but will be ADDING the responsibility of being the CEO of NOA. This is a way of unifying the ideas of the divisions, mostly because there has been a severe disconnect between NCL and NOA in recent years.

This doesn't make any sense, as Xenoblade has sold about 360k in North America with an opening of over 140k. And this is with limited supply in only a few retailers. Had it been supported by Nintendo from the get go, it could have sold double that.

So instead of getting fired like people asled for, he gets more responsabilities?
I like it.

How will this effect Nintendo as a whole? Clearly there will be better communication between Japan and NoA, but what will this mean?

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Considering the failure of the Wii U so far (missing both sales targets), having Iwata as the head seems idiotic at best - they need to have a radical rehaul, not a push from the old-school.

Yup. Pretty hilarious if you ask me. Pretty much a "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imaigne." type situation. Better not mess up NOE....he's got his eye on you...
