Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii Just Won Japan: Nintendo Puts out 2007 Wii release List

Steve, I agree with your sentiment..but one of the reasons I wrote "Wii Just Won Japan"..is because major gaming markets don't just switch from throwing major support from one manufacturer to another very often.

In Japan it essenetially went..

1983-1994 NES, SNES - Dominant in Japan.

1995*-2006** PS1, PS2 Dominant in Japan

*1995-1996 Transition from SNES to PS1 with bad SNES-N64 transition

*2006 Transition from PS2 to Wii, bad PS2-PS3 transition

2007- ?  Wii, ?

Therefore, it is important to recognize the rarity of the current changes in Japan if they only happen once per decade or so...

Wii Music is being released as a whole game....

Other than that if all the big three come out in 07 it will be a good year on the Wii.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Nintendo won Japan a long time ago, and if they were completely dominant at the moment the line up you've presented could be too little if the Wii was doing as well as, say, the GC. It's going to keep Nintendo moving, but it's not winning anything that wasn't already won.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

Don't forget Bokujou Monogatari (Harvest Moon) Kidou Senshi Gundam, Hajime no Ippo Revoltion (Victious Boxing, swinging around with the remote / nuchuck), Gundam and Harvest Moon are normally quite popular in Japan.

Considering Metroid will do much, much better in America than Japan, and considering Brawl likely does not have much text to translate, it looks like "the big three" along with Mario & Sonic and perhaps Disaster: Day of Crisis could make it out in the USA to combat Halo 3, GTA, Mass Effect, Too Human and Assassin's Creed for the Xbox 360, and GTA, MGS4, Assassin's Creed and the PS3 lineup.

How?... How can you set out this poor Disaster game or Mario & Sonic (!) against monsters like Halo, GTA or MGS4? This listing looks funny even as a text... The truth is Nintendo has nothing to compete against them. Nothing. Metroid will bomb in Japan (maybe not bomb - they just don't like it).

Yes, it's very true the 2007 is a year of Nintendo and Wii but this will change in the future.

  • Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race (DK Jet or DK Bongo Blast, US) - June 28, 2007
  • Wii Health Pack -- 2007
  • Disaster: Day of Crisis - 2007
  • Mario Party 8 - 2007
  • Project H.A.M.M.E.R. - 2007
  • Wii Music - 2007
  • Super Mario Galaxy - 2007
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 2007
  • Battalion Wars II - 2007
  • Forever Blue - 2007
  • Mario Strikers Charged - 2007
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 2007
  • Mario and Sonic at the Olympics - 2007
  • Consider that Big Brain Academy, Pokemon, Zelda, Fire Emblem, One Piece, Wii Play and Wii Sports are already out for Wii in Japan.

3rd party offerings for the year include:

RE4, RE: Umbrella Chronicles, Opoona, Nights, Dragon Quest: Swords, Treasure Island and more.

Whilst it would be nice if all those games come out in 2007, realisticaly it's not going to happen. Their are only 35 weeks left till the end of the year and just counting the first and third party games from that list their are 21 games. That means for every one of those games to make it out this year a new exclusive wii game would have to be released every 11 and a half days. That would be stupid for the games companies to do as the sales would eat into each other. Even if they did all come out then whats left for 2008?? Mario kart, f zero, animal crossing and pikmin? 4 whole exclusive games to last an entire year? Realisticaly you'll only see 60-70% of the games on that list make it out this year.

All of these games cater for THE SAME group of gamers... of course they are going to sell well but in the end Nintendo's lineup is much stronger from a broad spectrum point of view.

Do the Nintendo releases suit me? Probably not as much as the PC Lineup + Assassins Creed, Halo and GTAIV  but in terms of sales, I believe that Nintendo has a far upper hand.  This doesn't mean that each of the other consoles aren't going to sell well, but with the broad specrum of games that Nintendo has got they just have way more power over a much larger portion of people than the games that you listed have over more than a core / hardcore gamer / shooter / mature market... the mature market is what built the PS2's success but unfortunately the mature market is now the minority.

kber81, it's rather easy when you aren't interested in any of the 3 games you mentioned. And don't diss a game you know so damned little about. For all we know Disaster : Day of Crisis may be one of the best new IP's of the year. :p

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

each week it's becoming more obvious that Japan has chosen the Wii as their console for this generation.  The PS3 has enough games coming out in the future that will appeal to Japan to carve a niche similar to what the n64 did, but like those systems it does not have self sustaining sales.  The only time sales go to a decent level is when big games are released.

It's true that most of the systems that will be sold this generation aren't sold yet, but these races are almost always decided very early, especially if they are one sided like this.  It's like blu-ray vs HDDVD, those are very much in their infancy, but which one will win has basically already been decided.

quote from NeoGAF, stewacide 3rd Parties are saying : "They're thinking "oh sh*t, we should have started developing for the Wii before it crushed the competition!", consoling themselves with the thought that Nintendo 1st party will blow it's load in 2007 so their titles will have breathing room when they're finally done in 2008"
