The WiiU is currently at a lul in sales for the past 3 months. Until more games are released for it, the system will continue its trend, because well games sell hardware.

Nintendo is gearing up for the launch of their competitors' upcoming home consoles, and of course all the marketing and stocking that entails. Bringing customers to the video game consoles area of stores like Toys'R'us, Walmart, or dedicated game stores, this could lead to free advertisement for the WiiU, right in time for its "second" launch.
