This is true. The same thing happened with Gran Turismo and Kinect and look how successful Kinect is.
Finally some good news for Wii U.

Awww, you shouldn't have posted that. Now some users won't have the right to bash me for making this thread.
:P
i think it would work for M$ and/or Sony as well if one or the other is available plus a wiiu at the same time, especially if they are about the same price. it could go either way.
Maybe Sony or MS should just take over advertising of the Wii U entirely from Nintendo, since Nintendo doesn't seem to care to do it.

Well, that's the thing, they are. By advertising the PS4 and 720 respectively, it increases awareness for console gaming in general, so Nintendo doesn't even need to waste a dime doing it :)
hahaha you like angering non nintendo fans ay! ... the poll shows how many you have angered! .. lol

What can I say, some people can't handle the truth :P
To be honest I wish Nintendo also did their part in advertising, but you can't help to think that they are actually saving money by keeping their marketing small and letting the other two spend the big bucks.
Eh, perhaps. But I'd imagine the games, deals and the actual Wii U advertising around that time will make a bigger difference
Technically I think you are correct but I think the effect will be minimal.
For an example, I had been out of video gaming largely for almost a year and a half, then I heard the next nintendo console was launching so I got it, six months later I have purchased (including the Wii U of course) around $1000 worth of gaming related items (including a PS3 to catch up on the sony/3rd party stuff I missed as a Wii owner)
I could see the oposite happening, ie someone whose main gaming systems are usually sony and/or microsoft reignites their gaming passions with a new release and decides to pick up a Wii U as well (or a little later) to get the games they will miss, and the other example of people buying a Wii U because the PS4 and/or XBox are out of stock. But I think these will have a very small effect in the bigger picture.
Nintendo would be very smart however to use the time to launch a new advertising campaign and try to catch some of the buzz that will be going on at the time.
